We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebel Love and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rebel, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
K was born in the DR and raised in France until the age of 8 that’s when her family immigrated to the U.S. in 2005. French and Spanish are her native tongues because her dad is French and mom is Dominican. Her ability to be fluent in three languages is definitely a big influence on how we wanted to shape our performance. That along with Fern’s Caribbean influences from being born and raised in Caracas until age 8 gave us a strong rhythmic foundation. Fern also has had a rigorous musical education since an early age which has added jazz and other influences our sound.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
We always allow the art to flow through us, and while we both came from traditional music backgrounds we allowed ourselves to explore and create a hybrid sound and live performance with both digital and analog elements due to the pandemic’s effects on venues and gatherings of any type. We used an increase demand on our duo as an opportunity to really maximize how we present each of our skillsets. We started incorporating technology and elements of electronic music to fill our sound with live looping and mixing which also inspired many new songs which will be released soon. Without this challenge we would have never written the songs that we performed this year at the Grassroots festival and our sound would most likely be entirely analog. Rebel Love is about the strength we all have within ourselves to create our own destiny, it’s about being willing to change and receive and give love one another in all conditions, it’s about rising to the occasion and enjoying the life we have right now and cherishing one another every step of the way.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When friends from out of town visit we spend a lot of time outdoors nothings beats our beautiful beaches and parks. Jada Cole’s is definitely another place we stop with friends from out of town regularly they have a relaxed friendly jazz club atmosphere which most of our friends appreciate. We also love the pizza and beer at Strange Beast and Maxwell Brothers.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Smurphio and Juan Turros from the bands Suenalo and Afrobeta have been a huge help and example to us. We are also very grateful for Jada Cole’s owner Scott for welcoming us and allowing us to start our journey playing live shows. It’s still one of our favorite places to play. Special thanks to Sofilla and her band for collaborating with us. Smurphio was the first person to bring us on stage, it was K’s first time performing live in front of a crowd and getting paid for it.
