We had the good fortune of connecting with Rem,o.na’ Rey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rem,o.na’, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I was 4 years old, I stated to my parents, “I want to be on television.” And ever since I could remember, my parents would say, “One day you will be on top.” My parents have been my absolute favorite fans, biggest cheerleaders and motivators of my career. From a child, I had a very imaginative mind, where I would write movie/show scripts in my thoughts that would subsequently translate onto paper. Now, as an adult, it’s something I do without thinking about it. When I dreamt of a show concept that others were willing to endorse, I knew it was time to start “The R Productions”. My fiance’, Dwayne and I, without hesitation, started the business the very next day.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The R Productions produce invaluable content for film and television. Our first release is a reality series entitled, ‘Couples In Construction’ which focuses on the lives of five distinguished African-American couples who turn Palm Beach County on its head by showing the grit, grind, good, and gravitas of construction. While building is their business, building it together is their challenge. Currently, we are shopping this show to networks | streaming platforms and prayerfully will be making a big announcement soon.
They’re many successful Production companies that exist, but what sets us apart is simply, who we are. It’s not about our experience or wisdom, but it’s about relationship – our relationship with GOD and people. My background is in Communications, Multi-media, Public Relations, and Marketing, but I have been gifted by GOD to produce film and television content. I’m not that brilliant, business savvy, or brave, but with my faith in GOD, I am definitely able to accomplish anything. I have been dreaming of and working towards this moment of my career for 30 plus years. Yet I feel, I’ve only just begun. Though I have written plays, short stories and filmed a web-series, I haven’t done a lot in comparison to most. However, I’m ready and excited about what the future will present.
What I have learned is, everything you do in life is significant and ultimately prepares you for your ‘next’. Working at Rally’s, Burdines, Macy’s, and RWCCI have prepared me for the next phase of my life. Your brand or business is not a destination, it’s a journey. There are invaluable tools that you get from every facet of life which is necessary for the building and strengthening of your future. My work journey for most of my life has been difficult. Many times, I asked, “Why I am here, or What I am doing this for?” “This has nothing to do with what I really want to do.” I realized in those times, in the trenches, is where I learned faith, endurance, tenacity, kindness, compassion, patience, and perseverance. In addition, I made life-long connections with people that I may not have otherwise known.
On the other hand, I was a three-time beauty pageant winner, but that too came with major challenges. At age 11, while I was signed up to participate in my first pageant, I was diagnosed with Scoliosis (curvature of the spine) and had to be rushed to New York for immediate surgery. I woke up 3 days later on my face, which I had to lay on my stomach for 3 months, and then learn to walk again. I now had a scar from the top of my back all the way to the bottom. In addition, I had to wear a fiber-glass body cast for 9 months which totally changed my body shape. This was one of the lowest points of my life. Though I had physical limitations for about a decade after, this experience made me more diligent, because during this period my self-esteem and self-worth took more than a nose-dive. It was extremely difficult to recover from this period, because it negatively impacted my childhood into my adult life.
What do I want the world to know, “Praise GOD, I’m here”! We all have a purpose, and I want to fulfill my purpose to touch people’s lives, especially through stories.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
