We had the good fortune of connecting with Renata Jordan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Renata, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I had to make a decision between letting someone bully me around and limit me by suppressing my ability to use my ideas and skill sets, and choosing to give myself the flexibility to fire aimlessly at all the ideas i had in my mind. I knew there was chance for loss, but I knew I could only lose 1 thing; the chance to succeed, or lose money. And I’d rather take the risk and lose money in the process than lose a chance due to take off because I chose to be a coward- I cannot have any record of being a coward, so chose risk.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
In my industry these days, what sets me apart from most business owners would be my transparency embedded in my sales pitch. I’ve realized when you invest in perfecting your craft, there’s no need to embellish your product/services- your work will sell itself without forced effort on your part. Clients will always discover the truth, so it’s better your truth be able to stand when cross checked. I got where I am by not being afraid to lose it all and going with my gut even when the ideas sound illogical to other people- have a strategy that makes sense or someone that can build a solid strategy for you, and your ideas will take off. The biggest lesson I’ve learned in business is to not rely on anyone but God- people will back out of commitments without caring how it may affect you, but the tools God gives you to succeed are entirely up to YOU to utilize. This business was built 100% without borrowing money from anyone or any entity, no one investing in me financially, and starting it with $50 to my name at one of the lowest points of my life. Every day you have to wake up and figure it out. When you are chasing success, roadblocks will chase you- the bigger the goals, the greater the enemies both tangible and mental. You can choose to learn to carry your own weight or constantly be waiting for someone to rescue you. If you can fight and fend for yourself without having to make a single call for help, you’ve achieved true independence, and for that there is no replaceable asset.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take someone who is visiting my city to 7th Street South Craft Social. It’s a hidden speakeasy-like Craft Bar that I love going to when I don’t want to see the same faces everyday and want to hide, enjoy small bites, and have a good time without being interrupted. Outside of my city, I’d take them to my choice spots in Tampa and Miami. I like to getaway to nearby cities rather than being home. I need new scenery and constantly have the need to be impressed by new things because I get bored quickly.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
God first and foremost is the One who sends me all my ideas be it awake in spontaneous epiphanies, or in dreams; I see ideas in my dreams and I have to jot or draw them immediately so I don’t lose them. The Holy Scriptures are where I look for inspiration and templates on how to execute my business practices and artistic crafts in unique ways. My sisters second, as they have always seen and fueled my artistic inclines and have always pushed me to go with my artistic urges. My grandmother and my uncle Antonio have been a huge support and vital critics to perfecting all my crafts and executing my ideas with wisdom so to minimize my losses as much as possible. My brothers in law are guides I treasure so much for feeding me their financial and strategic wisdom for every big move I’ve ever made and want to make. Everyone that ever copied my ideas and creations have always been a confirmation that I carry something bigger than myself which truly comes from God that I need to feed to allow those ideas to blossom to make a positive impact in the long run. Certain teachers in my life who always believed in my struggling to stick to a rubric to be a sign of my need to keep traveling outside of the box when I feel the urge to go farther and higher- they always told me to do my best even if it means not following the rules to the tee.
