We had the good fortune of connecting with Resurrection and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Resurrection, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
My name is Resurrection, and I am a musician and content creator based out of Miami, FL. I was born in Mexico in June of 1987. My parents then migrated to a small town in Miami, called Homestead. My parents made a living in agriculture. On summer breaks my dad would take my sister Eloisa and I to pick beans. From a young age we were taught to work for our goals. Musically growing up in Miami and being around various cultures allowed me listen to many types of music genres. As a child, I first listened to Mexican regional and Tejano music, like Vicente Fernandez, Grupo Limite, Selena, La Mafia, Rigo Morales, and many more. But I also remember hearing salsa, merengue, and bachata. People can say what they want about Miami, but this city is eccentrically diverse. As I grew up, I began to explore hip hop and RnB. There is something special about an MC delivering a hard well written lyrical verse. Then as a teenager in 2003 I was introduced to punk rock. My music world was flipped upside down. I decided I wanted to learn guitar. Ever since I have played in many bands around the underground Miami music scene. Overall, this has made a crucial impact on my musical abilities, and I went from being a just guitarist to a musician and composer.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My musical style can be described as alternative hip hop, where I blend rap verses with intricate guitar leads. Recently, I have been excited about finally being able to confidently perform in front of a crowd. Facing the crowd was always the hardest. Ever since I began to play guitar in 2004 I always equated playing an original guitar piece felt like I was exposing my soul. I felt vulnerable and highly sensitive to any kind of criticism. A kind of fear of failing that persisted. The only thing that could drive that out is by facing the crowd. Constantly putting playing shows, open mics, festivals, music competitions. Little by little that fear was driven out and replaced a firm confidence. Ready to rock any show!
One major lesson I have learned since I began pursuing my music career is that, nobody is coming to rescue me. Nobody is coming to save me. Nobody is coming to hand me my dreams and aspirations all bundled up in a gift basket. Knowing this fact, I began to find new creative ways in getting my music to new listeners, as well as new marketing methods. Another major lesson is networking. Being out there as an artist and interacting with the audience and other musicians, that has been invaluable in the Miami music scene.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First spot I would bring them to my favorite burger food truck, La Burgesa. They are in Kendall, a region of Miami. They make the best Colombian burgers. I would definitely recommend to everyone.
Another spot would be Tea & Poets, located in South Miami. They serve coffee and tea, and on Wed have an open mic. Amazing place for artists.
A great spot would be Lot11, It’s a skateboarding place, but that just maybe skateboarder biased.
So many places, alot of mom and pop stores for sure.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Edwaffle, Carlos, Wilson, Marvin, Vindicated Spec, my son Angel, my nephews Issac, Jacob, Mark, my mom Hilda, my brothers and sisters. I could write many names but it would fill up the entire writing space. Thank you to all who have contributed to my work so far.
