We had the good fortune of connecting with Rey Acevedo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rey, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
I personally don’t believe in giving up. I would rather try and fail, learn from my mistakes and continue to try until I achieve my goals.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Being self employed can be very challenging. Unlike many of my fellow artist/designers, I like to work in a timely manor. I am very disciplined, organized, courteous, flexible, and I keep a constant line of communication with my customers. This has helped me grow my name/brand. It’s not easy to build a good reputation for yourself, it takes time and patience. You will have some challenges along the way, It could be something technical or personal, you’ll have to learn how to keep steady and maneuver around them. One important lesson I learned is to be upfront with your customer. Be honest about a project at hand, how long it will take, the cost, explain the process and keep the customer updated on the progress. I have been working as a freelance artist and designer for over 20 years. I’ve worked on footwear brands like Osiris, Tony Hawk, Champion, Heely’s, Blackhawk and many more. Produced a variety of commercial art, logo designs, t-shirt designs, tattoos, company identities, educational workbooks, sequential comic book work and numerous illustrations for Upper Deck / Marvel trading cards. Most recently, I illustrated a children’s storybook called The Adventures of Wukong and Bajie available thru Amazon.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Florida, so the most obvious place to take my best friend would be the beach and then the theme parks up in Orlando. Day one, the beach and eat lunch at Oceans 234. Day two, show them the everglades. Day three, drive up to Orlando, and head over to Universal studios. Day four, spend the day at Islands of adventures. Day five, check out other places in the Orlando area. Restaurants, shopping, bars, etc. Day six, pass out from exhaustion, lol.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My wife, she supports and encourages me in any endeavor.
