We had the good fortune of connecting with Richart Ruddie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Richart, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Life used to be all about taking risks. Now it’s all about compliance and making sure everything is buttoned up for clients and our brands. I took a lot of risks in my teens, twenties, and into my early thirties. Now that I have exited more risky businesses and am focusing on building out one of the worlds largest compliance companies I even think twice about walking across the street if we don’t have a walk signal.

You need to calculate your risk tolerance and decide what is the right level for you. If you venture too far outside of your risk level then you struggle mentally and that just holds you back. Find the right balance for you later in life but earlier in life you need to take risks and chances to get ahead of the pack. Once you have a large foundation than you can work on preservation.

What should our readers know about your business?
Captain Compliance is a data privacy software company thats coming out of beta mode now. While we are building out our first product we have had a tranche of referrals that started to flow in asking for our help. Our mission is to help protect businesses from gaps in their compliance with a focus on global and domestic data privacy laws.

While building out the software we have put a focus on gathering level 1 team members and A+ caliber team members that Steve Jobs would be proud of. A level 1 employee is one that thinks outside the box, like an owner, and is asking critical questions, solving critical problems, and working out ways to expand the business. What I’ve learned from my other businesses and successful exits is that it’s important to hire the best. Steven Schwarzman wrote about the importance of hiring high caliber team member if you want to grow and scale.

That’s what we are doing at Captain Compliance along with building a company with a focus around feedback from data protection officers, chief privacy officers, and compliance personnel who are giving us feedback on products on the market and how to make our products better. We believe in the match and exceed approach. There’s a few ways to win business and one of the many tools in our war chest is to have a fantastic product along with a fantastic team and customer support.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ll start from South Miami and work our way up to Palm Beach so we cover all of South Florida. I’m a traveling aficionado. Visit Coral Gables and stay at the Biltmore a classic hotel on a beautiful golf course, head over to Brickell and have dinner at Delilah the hottest Supper Club and best spot in Miami for food and drinks. Rent bikes in South Beach and bike from the Setai Hotel down to South Pointe Park and then loop around on the intracoastal side. If you like Thai Food go to Nairaya or if you crave Pizza theres Lucali next door. Stop at Gulfstream Race Track and Shops in Hallandale on the way up to Fort Lauderdale nd visit Las Olas for food, drinks, and boating up and down our waterways. If you want to see a Giant Guitar Casino there’s the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood just west of Fort Lauderdale and then cap off a visit to South Florida with a trip to see Palm Beach and stay at the Breakers Hotel where there are top French and Italian restaurants on the island and finally rent a boat to visit Peanut Island where you can hang out and snorkel by the sand bar.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to thank the guy behind the Founders Podcast. Whenever I listen to another podcast I wonder why I don’t just listen to Founders more. The reason it’s so informative is that David Senra recaps biographies written by or about some of the most important CEOs, Founders, and Entrepreneurs in history. You can learn so much by reading and David Senra reads for you and recaps so its a great way to spend time learning while you’re in the car. The knowledge imparted on me is one of the many reasons I’ll be light years ahead of my competition & peers.

My other shoutout is to my current team. I’ve learned to hire A+ players and what I call Level 1 Employees. Team effort with an A+ team is a formula for success.
