We had the good fortune of connecting with Rory Lee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rory, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
There are a couple of different building blocks to the MakeupByRoryLee brand. I first began as a freelance makeup artist with private clients in the 90’s. After being invited to work on set for a commercial by an advertising executive, who was getting her makeup done for a wedding; I realized that production work was something I really enjoyed. I applied my touches of excellence, paying attention to detail, and with a service oriented spirit. The bookings continued to blossom, with one referral after another, very quickly.
In 2004, my personal life took a shift and after being married 25 years, I was suddenly single! I realized that I needed to build a new foundation; begin anew and increase my income. Knowing that I could only be in one place at a time, coupled with the desire to share my knowledge, we put some systems in place and that allowed me the opportunity to book team artists to cover jobs when I was overbooked. Film productions gave me the responsibility to book a team – hair, makeup and wardrobe too! This incredible stepping stone gave me the opportunity to share my knowledge and skills with others; and as a result, I am blessed to have mentored, countless others, in the growth of their business!
That’s where MakeupByRory, inc began.
In 2014, I launched the RoryLee Makeup line, with only 1 eyeshadow palette- and it was designed for women on-the-go. I felt there was a need to consolidate the amount of products that I had in my kit, in order to work and travel more efficiently, as well as serve a full range of international skin tones. I had a desire to ensure that the quality of ingredients I used were vegan friendly, safe for sensitive skin, looked great on hi definition cameras, and for everyday!
Aside from our tv /film and production work, we also have an amazing clientele of women that are busy professionals that want to effortlessly enhance their natural beauty. These ladies are also very conscious about the products that they use on their skin!
What should our readers know about your business?
I did not know everything all at once. I took the “one idea at a time” approach, using my past professional experience. I love learning and am not intimidated when met with a challenge. I know that God is always there to help guide me and that taking a risk, trial and error, is a part of learning. I have also been blessed with some incredible mentors, a great team of talented artists and a supportive tribe. Even to this day, I am also involved with learning and continuing education.
When I started in the beauty business with private clients and friends asking me to do their makeup, it was something I enjoyed and was naturally good at. It was my third or fourth career shift in pursuit of finding my purpose. I studied 5 years of chemistry (on the 4 year plan) at UM. I had no desire to use my love for science in the medical field, (which was my mom’s idea). I was more interested in the science of skin; which I use now as a professional skin therapist and licensed esthetician. It also helps with the development and growth of my makeup line!
Makeup is fun for me, and a creative outlet. I never really wore much makeup myself, but was always big on caring for my skin! I realized that I had a gift to “paint faces”. I always loved different kinds of art mediums; like paper mache, tie dying, batiking, shellac, jewelry making and even coloring (which I do now for relaxation). I love the transformation of seeing women smile when they look in the mirror to admire their enhanced beauty. It’s amazing what just a splash of color can do for our inner confidence boost.
After working on different types of shoots, I had a great time and realized that production work was something I had a passion for! I went into learning mode to gain the professional knowledge necessary for our business to grow. I felt that I had a something special to offer the world.
In 2004, I realized that I needed help, because I could only be in one place at a time. I was getting booked on jobs where they needed more than one makeup artist. Coming from a corporate background, I put some systems in place and that allowed me the opportunity to book like minded artists to cover jobs when I was overbooked or needed extra hands on deck. Film productions gave me the opportunity to bring my team with me – hair, makeup and wardrobe too! This was the beginnings of my corporation. I could see my purpose and passion coming together with our products and services.
Teaching nonprofit sessions with young ladies, through OurGirls, has given me an outlet and opportunity to give back to the community. Serving mostly teen girls, we conduct age appropriate skincare and makeup application workshops and techniques to consistently share this vision of inner beauty and that beauty comes in all hues. Some of the life skills exercises that we conduct are quite profound and eye opening (or should we say “heart opening”).
Fast forward to 2014, With the different facets of the MakeupByRoryLee brand forming; it first began with MakeupByRory, the services and then the product line RoryLee®️ Makeup!
The tv/film trends were changing, high definition cameras, advanced technology were on the horizon and the evolving fast paced production work was a must. I felt there was a need to reduce the amount of products I was bringing and using on set, improve the quality, as well as being able to service all skin tones.
I began the process of creating a consolidated amount of products that I had in my kit, in order to work more efficiently as well as serve a full range of skin tones. I had to ensure that the quality of ingredients I used were vegan friendly, plus looked great on camera, not just for everyday! I casted the vision in March 2014, worked with my manufacturer and then launched the first product, one eyeshadow palette at an event with my mentor Sonia Jackson-Myles, Sarah Jakes and Cynthia Bailey, during Miami Fashion Week in May, 2014!
In addition to the tv /film and commercial work, we have an amazing clientele of production companies, studio, networks, and corporations. Our makeup line provides men and women, a way to quickly and effortlessly enhance their natural look on camera. With consultations, tutorials available, we have the products to help them look their best. That is how my purpose and passion has melded together with offering products and services.
Our entire team #MakeupByRoryLee is grateful for the opportunity to be of service. We travel, serve a global clientele here in So Florida and beyond.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Depending on the time of year, we would no doubt get to the water side, we’d either start with brunch by the beach or a late lunch on the intracoastal. Having grown up in The Bahamas, I LOVE the beach, the ocean, the intracoastal – anywhere where we could enjoy the harmony of the water and waves! We would scope out the local scene and find arts, music and culture related activities. … all of these pastimes make my heart smile. Depending on the weather and what’s happening (because there’s always something happening in So.Flo), I would take them to some of the historic or cultural venues too.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
One of my business colleagues, Luisa started her company Macaron Dreams – The BEST macarons I have ever tasted. They’re a delicious French dessert treat with mix of fresh fillings.
