We had the good fortune of connecting with Ruben Campbell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ruben, how do you think about risk?
Risk is essential to personal growth as it does require to test the best of our abilities facing the unknown and always brings a lesson to learn after you have gone through the experience. When I was 22 years old, after my business degree, I had to do my military service as it was still mandatory in Spain. Most of the times, you spend the 9 months in your city, but after the initial 3 months of instruction, the Captain saw something in me and suggested to participate in a 3 days tests to join the NATO forces in Bosnia for the remaining of my military service. Although thousands of people were coming for those tests, only 1 position was available for those doing their military service and after 3 days of all kinds of tests, I got the position. Now the challenge was to announce that at home and tell my parents that I was going to spend the next 6 months in a war zone joining the international forces for peace. My Father took it very badly and my Mother pulled from her unconditional love praying time to go as fast as possible. 6 months later I returned home with a medal of honor, but most importantly a new man, a person with unshakeable principles based on respect, love, humanity, compassion, humbleness and resilience to overcome any situation. Hadn’t I take that risk, I wouldn’t be the person I am today.

Another major moment in my life was when, at 35 years old, I decided to sell my shares in a real estate business to my partner in May 2009, and go after my dreams to move to Miami so I could pursue a career as a singer songwriter. My partner signed 2 checks for a total of roughly $500,000 to buy me out and dated the checks on July 28th 2009 to be cashed that day. In the meantime, I bought my plane ticket to Miami and paid for the first 2 nights at a Hotel in South Beach. Saying goodbye to my people was really tough, especially breaking up with my girlfriend as I knew I had to embark in my new adventure alone. The critical moment came when the day I went to cash the checks, I learned that my partner had declared himself in bankruptcy and I lost absolutely all my money. So I had to decide whether to stay in Madrid and try to rebuild myself or jump on that place that was already paid for and see what destiny had reserved for me. So I took the risk, landed with $42 in my pocket and started my US adventure. 13 years later and many different small jobs later, here I am after becoming a US citizen, bought a house and expanding my luxury real estate business to assist local and international clients making the right move in the Miami Real Estate market.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
After I came back from my military service with the NATO forces in Bosnia, I joined the number 1 audit & consulting firm in the world back then (Arthur Andersen) and worked 5 years there, 16hours a day, 6 days a week. Even though it was very intense, they helped me becoming a great business consultant and gave me the opportunity to participate in many different consulting projects, in different industries and deal with top executives. That kind of experience helped me being very comfortable later when dealing with high end clients.

Then a client hired me as a business consultant earning 5 times the previous salary and working half the amount of hours, which opened the door to enjoy life and find that perfect balance.

2 years later I made the jump to become an entrepreneur and fulfill my desire to work for myself, design, create and execute my own ideas while learning about all the necessary areas of owning your own business.

Finally, it all came together when I launched my own brand in Miami (My Real Estate Couture) where I deliver a full 360 solution for handpicked clients not only finding the best deal in the market but providing also all the necessary services around to guarantee their peace of mind with a team of highly experienced professionals (real estate attorney, inspector, lender, contractor, architect, interior designer and concierge lifestyle).

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, Miami is a very dynamic city with constant flow of people from all over the world and lots of major events throughout the year but definitely some not to miss are…Art Basel, Miami Yacht Show, Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, Miami Food & Wine Festival, Miami Swim Week, Miami Speed Week Formula 1 Grand Prix, Miami Heat Basket ball Games, etc…

About the city, the great thing about Miami is that you have like 10 mini-Miamis inside Miami and each area will give you a different flavor and cultural experience…like the art deco style of South Beach, the vibrant financial district of Brickell, the lush area of Coconut grove, the latin flavor of Little havana, the luxury shopping at Bal Harbour, the exclusivity of Fisher Island, the street art at Wynwood, the luxury brands at Design District, the good sales at Sawgrass Mills mall, etc…but certainly something you have to do is jump on a boat and cruise around.

As for restaurants and lounges, the offering is so large and diverse that I would need a lot more space here to share…ahah…but to name a few…Smith & Wollensky, Joe Stone Crab, Casa Tua, The Bazaar, Jaya at Setai, Mila, Los Fuegos, Cecconi’s, Nobu, Makoto, Carpaccio, Il Mulino at Acqualina, Bourbon Steak by Michael Mina, Cipriani, Dolores but you can call me Lolita.

To my parents and other family members for their love and education I received. To those friends that have supported me when I needed it.
To those clients that have trusted me and gave me the opportunity to serve them.
