We had the good fortune of connecting with Saan Rose and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Saan, what principle do you value most?
Being my true authentic self, I need to be, this way I am truly in touch with who I am and it makes the creative process more straightforward and a true expression of who I am.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a boy I always loved the Sunday comic, I would trace over the comics, and I started to love drawing from there.
In my teens, I was drawn closer to art when I saw exhibitions at the Queen’s Park Art Gallery. This was the first time I was exposed to professional art.
I am still finding myself as a visual artist, I have a style of painting that can best describe as a type of Impressionism/Expressionism.
I am mostly known for my murals and this is what I am most proud of, I have done some very noticeable murals all over the island.
Now I want to fuse more graffiti style into my work, I have a strong love for NYC and the Caribbean connection and I want to tell that story, I want to have a visual representation of this in my work and this is what I want as my brand going forward.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, the first thing we will have is a beach day well a few lol, Savvy On The Bay, Browne’s Beach Carlisle Bay Bridgetown is a great place to relax, have a drink, and great food, and have some fun snorkeling with the Turtles, etc… this is also where you can find my art on display.
While in Bridgetown we will have to go to the Office Restaurant, the perfect place to sample Bajan cuisine and overlook the main street of our capital.
A bus ride to the East Coast is a must and stopping off at the Scenic Bathsheba for photos and fresh coconut water.
I love karaoke so will definitely have to go to some of my favorite spots like the Zimmers Restaurant and Bar or The Legendary Bar and Lounge.
St.Lawrence Gap is great for nightclub life and having a drink, and the place to be is the Oistins fish fry on Friday nights, where you can get fresh seafood prepared in a variety of ways.
Saturday is traditional Pudding and souse, The souse is pickled pork and the “pudding” is steamed sweet potato.
I would insist that they visit in July to enjoy the best summer festival Crop-Over.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My art and airbrushing tutors at the Community Development Art Career Program and Tennille Griffith.
