We had the good fortune of connecting with Safía Stoute and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Safía, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
I want my legacy to be one of change, through my work I aspire to inspire people and change limiting societal norms
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In being an Artist now for a couple of years I have to say I’m not sure where the interest in Art started but I can definitely point out when it became a passion. In 2017 when I started my degree in Fine Arts I soon learned Art could not only be a visual attraction but also a vehicle for change. Through my Art I endeavor to explore the life as an “Islander” as well as the Black experience/ culture.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
On my Island I find the East Coast the most peaceful and tranquil
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The Barbados Community College was the place where not only my creativity was unleashed but also where my mind was open to revolutionary ideas
