We had the good fortune of connecting with Sailor Kit Kat and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sailor, what do you attribute your success to?
I would say the most important factor behind my success is authenticity. I’ve always been myself, even while dressing up as other characters or people! I’m recognized for the characters I bring to life and inspire others to also do so while they cosplay. I strive to take the time of owning my character and transforming them into something that could be a Sailor Kit Kat signature.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Outside of cosplay, I do work full time in the hospitality industry. One thing the hospitality industry taught me that translated to being a content creator is time management and also detailing. When planning a costume, you want to make sure you have all pieces together such as the actual costume, the wig, the shoes, any accessories (such as earrings, necklaces, bracelets, belts, capes, etc.), and your makeup come together to showcase your vision. A wonderful example of this would be planning Princess Jasmine, based on the 2019 live-action “Aladdin”. The costume Naomi Scott wore in the video is so elaborate, regal, and showcases Jasmine as a character. I wanted to portray that in real life as well and found a close replica of her costume from an online store. I also hunted down replicas of her earrings, necklace, bracelet, and crown; however, the bracelet was quite elusive. I ended up using some of my own bracelets from Hot Topic to tie together the peacock theme from her in the harvest dance scene. Being able to juggle a full-time job and also being a content creator has been a challenge, but also a blessing. I learned not to take myself so seriously. I also learned not to feel different for being a cosplayer who may primarily commission or purchase a pre-made costume. I strive for my cosplays to be as accurate as possible and constantly scour stores for the right costume. I have detailed and customized some of my own costumes, such as Poison Ivy from “Batman & Robin”. Lastly, the most important lesson I learned is to give back. Give advice for those who seek it, help inspire them and cultivate their ideas and bring them to life, and share where you may have found something. I always share with others where I found items for my cosplays, and people have always been so appreciative of me doing so! Overall, I want the world to know that Sailor Kit Kat is a cosplayer who wants to stand out on her own but also doesn’t hesitate to help those starting out or who need to be uplifted. As Cinderella said, “Have courage and be kind. For where there is kindness, there is goodness, and where there is goodness, there is magic”.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I personally love visiting Cauley Square in the Goulds, especially to visit the Tea Room. A perfect place to relax with friends for some light eats and their delicious Spiced Tea! Another place I would bring some close friends to Mr. & Mrs. Bun for another restaurant option, as it is a family run and a small business. For entertainment, I find that bringing friends to Arcade Odyssey for some classic arcade fun is best! You could always visit one of the bigger arcades and entertainment venues, but none of them compare to Arcade Odyssey in my personal opinion. Since I also enjoy swimming, I love bringing friends to the Venetian Pool for those who’ve never been to Miami before.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to some of my cosplay groups I am a part of as well as some cosplayers that have meant so much to me. First, I want to dedicate this to the Gotham Underground Cosplay. TGU has always been there for me and supported every decision I make as a cosplay. I also want to thank my mother for supporting me through all my trials and for uplifting me with my successes. My best friend in the whole world, Talia, is someone I would say thank you to for starting me in this crazy world of cosplay! Back in 2012, we could’ve never imagined how far it has taken us, and while she has decided not to attend conventions; she is very supportive of me and pushes me to be the best person I can be in and out of cosplay. And lastly, I would have to thank all my fellow cosplayers, photographers, convention staff, etc. for being so awesome and cheering me on.
