Meet Sam DeRose Jr | Music Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sam DeRose Jr and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sam, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I am from Philadelphia. I come from a family that are music lovers. My mother was an entertainer and my father was an entrepreneur within the show business world. As I was growing up I was exposed to the pro’s and cons within the two perspectives. The result was a firm understanding of what it means to be and artist but also what it means to make a successful living within the music business. Sort of a merging of the business of music and the creative side as a musical artist. The cliche being “when art and business collide it equals turmoil and chaos” for me that phrase always added up to “understanding and success”. I continue to enjoy a creative life style as an artist/musician, singer/songwriter and producer/engineer. These masterstrokes however charmed are built on strong work ethics, collaborated efforts, shared knowledge and a willingness to help others.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Wow, that’s a lot of questions rolled into one.

At the moment what Im most excited about is I have a new single coming out that will go to commercial radio in August through Sony. The single “Sarah” will go to Top40, Adult Contemporary and Modern Rock radio stations across the United States.

We are in the process of shooting the official video. The video features all the latest and greatest special effects incorporating some of the most beautiful and breath taking sets we have ever seen.

Kenny (manager) has been scouting all of social media for guitar players and drummers. We want to feature some of the up and coming new talent in this video. So all of you drummers and guitarist be on the look out! We need you!

In addition to radio and social media the single “Sarah” will be promoted through live performance on television and in the larger venues through out the US. with a European festival tour to be announced.

The new single “Sarah” was recorded and produced in London England at the world famous Abbey Road Studios in Studio Three by yours truly. The song was initially recorded in all analog and sent straight to tape. For production it was produced using the Abbey Road SSL G-Plus mixing desk, then mastered by Andy Vandette in New York’s Engine Room and eventually converted to digital for distribution.

As a singer/song writer and bassist the single is extremely special to me in that it show casing my writing and production skills but also puts the spot light on the range and soulfulness of my voice. The song is one of four I completed at Abbey Road that marks a move to a new stylized genre that defines my sound and brand. Part of that sound is a style of bass that I call “story book bass lines” that actually tell a story under the song as it flows. The song also features a virtuoso lead bass solo combining speed, technique and catchy melodic melodies as well.

To answer your question “what sets me apart from others and makes me stand out?” Ive always thought of it as the opposite. In the music industry I always thought of myself as standing “In”. If you are music people? Then you are my people! Music choose me, I never had a say in the matter. It’s a life style. Music has ruined my life and saved my life all my life.

As a music producer Ive charted on commercial radio in Rock, Pop and R&B genres. For a time I was given a production suite inside a well known Recording Studio in Philadelphia. I developed artists for the major labels. I would find talent, write their songs, record, engineer and produce them. Then get them radio play then submit what’s was called a SoundScan report to the lawyers and wait to get paid. Eventually this led to owning my own graphics and web design company that specializes in servicing all facets of the music business world. We do everything!

As a musician I started and stayed with electric bass although I learned to play other instruments, electric bass is my first love. Early on I mentored privately studying advanced composition and theory, classical solo violin as applied to electric bass, principles of chamber music and orchestral designs for film and television.

I worked closely with Les Godfrey of Godfrey guitars developing an electric bass with a hyper extended neck. The “Dragonetti Soloist” comes as a hollow body and is hand carved to order. The bass comes in fretted and fretless, neck through designs feature a 30.5 inch three octave neck with 36 frets, locking tuners, active pickups, tremolo bass bridge, traditional scroll headstock, exotic woods and a finish that is comparable to violin varnishes of past history.

Les has been commissioned to make me three more bass’s to support a US/European tour TBA. The basses will be thin and very light weight for travel. Scheduled to be completed first quarter next year for the upcoming tour.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This one is easy! If you are one of my best friends we are going straight to the studio to write, record, hangout and either talk about musical instruments and recording equipment or amps and playing live. If there is any open mic clubs still open then its straight to the club to cut heads and jam.

If you are a regular person? I live in Florida so…beach, Universal, Disney or any other tourist trap available! There is so much to do and all of it is awesome! Be merry!

As far as eating and drinking. I’m a raw vegan, gluten free and also seed oil free. This can make it tough finding the right restaurant! Steak houses are the best because they always have fresh vegetables as sides and great salads. Although when I tell the waiter no need to cook my broccoli it does raise some suspicions. I have to say, no one wants to hear a vegan talk about being a vegan. Not even me!

I don’t drink or do any kinds of drugs at all. Im also a Reiki Master.

Recently Kenny released a vinyl version of the song “Man From Manhattan” a collaboration between Freddy Mercury of Queen and Eddie Howell with Freddie producing. Kenny manages Eddie and single handedly brought the song back from the archives with a Warner Brothers blessing. The first pressing sold out in the first 24 hours with a steady stream of orders piling in.
