We had the good fortune of connecting with Sam Lewend and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sam, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process I had behind starting my own business was that I watched my parents run a successful business for 26 years. My mom and dad owned and operated a scrap metal recycling business which rolled right into construction for me. I was at the yard helping my father fix equipment or my mom in the office with paperwork. I always had a passion for heavy equipment and running the guys.
What should our readers know about your business?
In South Florida construction companies are a dime a dozen, one thing that I feel set me apart from others was honesty and being upfront about what to expect. When I first started out in the business I would give unrealistic expectations and all that did was hurt me in the long run. People will understand if you are running late from not completing a job the day before. You just have to communicate with the client and be upfront and honest. With this I learned people will be happier with the end result. You are not going to get every job you bid and you honestly don’t want every job. Construction is about giving the best end result to the client while keeping to the budge they have set. One thing that really helps is mastering one craft. You don’t have to be the best at everything you do. Be great at one thing and stick to it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For a week long adventure in Florida I would have to say it will start out in Boca at Mizner to walk around outside with the shops and dinning. The next day we would go to Deerfield beach to the Whale’s rib for lunch or dinner. The other days will be spent relaxing and checking out the nature preserves around south east florida.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Other then my parents being an inspiration to me I would have to say my wife has been the biggest rock I have in my life. With owning a business there are long hours and a lot of time away from my family. She is the person who allows me to work long hours and still feel apart of everything that takes place at home. Wallace is the biggest support system in my life. She is a big reason why I have had my success so early in life.
