We had the good fortune of connecting with Sancia Powell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sancia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I got into photography in 2018, I was working as an assistant to another photographer. During this time, I was able to gain knowledge and hands-on experience that I didn’t want to lose. In 2020, we parted ways, and this was my opportunity to do something for myself. I never had any gears, however, that didn’t stop me from pursuing the dream I had of being an independent photographer.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I launched my business in March 2020, when the pandemic hit, and all bookings I had were canceled. I had invested a large sum into getting my gear, and a computer and paid for the subscriptions needed. This was a huge setback, however, I didn’t lose focus as I had the Bokeh Media Tree group helping me along the way.
As a female in a mostly male-dominated industry, I had to find a way to stand out. The goal for my business is to be recognized for my work without even having to have my name attached to it. Until I get there, I’ve decided to become a muse for ladies who may not feel confident in their skin. I’ve been able to help others gain the confidence they need to do their first photo shoot, wear a swimsuit, and feel confident enough to show their bodies. Due to this, a lot of my clients are females that love the vibe and energy I bring. I’ve shown them realness, I’ve given them advice and I’ve shown them that they are beautiful just the way they are.
I am both a photographer and a model, I started modeling for my fellow creatives as a way to help them with an idea that they may have. I’ve worked with Stacy B, Mikhail Smith, Dean Salmon, AndreDesignz just to name a few. Working with these creatives got me noticed by a few fashion companies that needed a plus-size model and this was the start of my modeling career.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am a nature lover and once there’s the option for water to be involved, I am ready! For a week-long trip, starting in Montego Bay (Mobay), lunch would be at the Marina Palms Restaurant and Bar. Located at the Montego Bay Yacht Club, it had a beautiful view of the docks and the food is beyond great! Dinner at Dr. Cave Beach. A sunset dinner by the beach is perfection! After dinner, a night tour of the Rose Hall Great House is highly recommended.
Trelawny – passing through Trelawny parish, I highly recommend Martha Brae River Rafting. This is a beautiful experience and very calming. There’s also the Luminous Lagoon, which is a night tour by Glistening Waters. You’ll get a 45-minute tour of the lagoon and get the chance to see bioluminescent planktons.
St Ann – many persons know of Dunns River Falls, however, my recommendation is Little Dunns River. This spot is mostly locals, a well-kept property and the beach is right at the bottom. The best of both worlds. Food will be from Ochi’s Jerk Center.
St Mary- What is an adventure without some off-road activities? Dirt Adventure in Boscobel St Mary is super fun! They have activities such as ATV riding, River Tubing, Horseback Riding, Sea Tubing, and even Boat Cruises. There are also package deals available.
Portland- one of the most beautiful parishes in Jamaica, Portland is a gem! I’ve stayed at the Kanopi House and Great Huts, both were amazing stays. The Kanopi House gives you access to the Blue Lagoon and Great Huts gives you access to Boston Beach. There are so many falls to visit, my recommendations are Summerset Falls, Nanny Falls, and Reach Falls. Visiting Turtle Bay Cove is also a must.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I love to give credit where it is due. I learned and got into photography with help from Peace Photography by Nation. In 2020, I was introduced to the photography group Bokeh Media Tree by Andre from Whitehead Media Entertainment. This group help me tremendously as we had daily photography challenges, we were able to show our work and got feedback. We did group photography trips and the list goes on. I launched my business in March 2020, unfortunately, the pandemic hit, and jobs were scarce, luckily, we had this group. I met some great people that I still look up to such as Stacy B, Warren Minto, and Essie, just to name a few. I remember watching retouched photography videos from AndreDesignz, his videos were so detailed and I am also thankful to him.
