We had the good fortune of connecting with Sandra Doman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sandra, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I was diagnosed with scoliosis as a kid. Through all competitive sports it never bothered me until I was in my early 20s living in New York and working at USA TODAY the newspaper. I developed back pain so severe that I had to stop all physical activities. I couldn’t even walk my dog. I saw some of the best orthopedists, neurologists, and PTs between New York and DC. It wasn’t until I combined chiropractic care with yoga that I was able to not just get out of pain but back to all of my favorite sports like horseback riding and surfing. Miami Sports Chiropractic & Yoga Center was created on the principles of a ‘treat and release’ philosophy: to treat pain with manual medicine and keep people out of pain with lifestyle-based activities such as yoga and posture rehabilitation.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
13 years ago when I started in practice, yoga was just hitting mainstream hobbies. It was about stretchy pants, looking calm and being young and flexible. For that reason, opening Miami’s first physician-supervised yoga therapy center was a big jump from mainstream orthopedic care at that time. I can’t tell you how many people in healthcare told me that combining chiropractic care with yoga would fail. I think about them a lot. I was absolutely certain I could reverse engineer why mixing the two therapies cured my back pain and I became even more determined to utilize it for patients as a method of giving them their dignity back and freedom from pain. Using yoga as a physical therapy improves posture, decreases pain, teaches stress reduction methods and allows patients to become more independent from doctor-hopping and chronic musculoskeletal disorders.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents, Penny and David Doman, are off the charts. I consider their love and guidance to be the foundation on which I’ve built my life. My mother is a teacher by training and my father is a gastroenterologist. They instilled unimpeachable integrity, work ethic and living in service.
