We had the good fortune of connecting with Santiago Tejeda and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Santiago, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I would say is a combination of different factors, both internal and external. Internally, the team my cofounder, Ignaciom and myself have built. Ignacio is a design engineer with a great marketing and analytical mind, who helps design the products and manage the marketing. Likewise, we have David Melançon, whose customer and branding expertise has been great, Dennice Quijano who helped us and Ines Herkommer, a dentist based in México.
Externally, I would say the circumstances around brands, products, and the world connectivity. We started this business from México and have managed to position ourselves in the U.S. focusing on the pain points we understand our clients have, which are: (i) not sustainable oral care products; and (ii) cheap, disposable and not defined products that align or resonate with the consumers.
Consumers are looking for products that do not fall in what we call a sea of sameness. The oral care industry has no inspiration, emotion or brand connection to consumers like Apple or Dyson.
That is why we decided to create a unique and premium oral care brand, where our customers can feel connected and aligned with their lifestyle.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Singular Care offers distinctive, eco-friendly products that align with the values and lifestyle of conscious users who prioritize respect and individuality. Our focus on sustainability and quality gives a unique, meaningful choice for a mindful consumer, a SINGULAR solution. We aim at solving the oral care waste problem (estimated 23 billion toothbrushes and 20 billion toothpaste plastic tubes are disposed of yearly) and do not represent the customers.
What makes the team different is the expertise, the alignment in ideas and lifestyle and being outsiders to an industry that hasn’t changed in the last 30 years.
Ignacio is a design engineer with design product experience, and I studied law in Mexico and worked at Baker McKenzie for six years before pursuing an MBA.
That’s why when we started with the idea to impact the oral care industry, we launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. In the first 30 days, we validated there was a market and sold more than $50,000 USD. Since then, we have been in constant connection with the customers to improve and serve them better.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Honoring my Mexican heritage, I would take my friend out for some tequila and mezcal. Some tacos would be great as well, sadly you can only get the best of those in Mexico still!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The team that has believed in this project since the beginning. First to Ignacio Lopez, my co-founder.
Then to all the early Friends and Family investors we got at the beginning, whose names I will reserve but they know who they are.
And lastly, but not least, to David, Dennice and Ines, whose help, advise and guidance at the initial stages has been a great differentiator.
