We had the good fortune of connecting with Sara Broers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sara, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
I truly believe if you are passionate about something, it’s important to keep going. Often times when we start something it takes a while for things to catch on with others. The key is to keep going and not give up. If you believe you have exhausted all of your possibilities for something you are passionate about, it’s probably time to hang it up and give the key to someone else.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am the CEO of Travel With Sara, Social Connections, LLC, and the Co-Owner of the Midwest Travel Network. Iowa is my home and many refer to Iowa and the Midwest fly over states. I realized several years ago that the Midwest was falling further and further behind in many things, including growing businesses. I have connected several people with others throughout my journey to help them grow. I started the North Iowa Social Media Breakfast Club in 2013 and it continues to meet today. The first meeting we had three people attend. I booked the meeting space for the next meeting as soon as it ended. Each meeting more people showed up and today more than 500 people have attended these meetings over the years. I learned early on to show up. Most people simple don’t show up. If you show up you are a step ahead of your competition. I thrive on helping people make valuable connections through the world of travel and share the stories of my experiences along the way. The Midwest Travel Network continues to grow and it’s fun to see destinations being recognized on a map when before, nobody ever talked about their destination. Social Media is a powerful tool and a blogger has the skills to help everyone tell their story. I am also honored to be the social media instructor at two auction schools across the country, America’s Auction Academy in Dallas, Texas, and World Wide College of Auctioneering in Iowa.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My hometown of Mason City, Iowa, is home to the Historic Park Inn Hotel, the last known hotel in the world designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. You can book a stay in this historic hotel and then visit Meredith Willson’s Boyhood Home nearby at Music Man Square. Indulge in one of the best steaks that you will ever have at the Northwestern Steakhouse in Mason City. A short seven mile drive to the west will take you to Clear Lake, Iowa. Here you can visit the legendary Surf Ballroom and stand in the venue where Buddy Holly played his last concert. Before you leave the area, be sure to make the trek to the Buddy Holly Crash site. The 1/4 mile walk is worth every step. Starboard Market is on Main Avenue in Clear Lake and has home cooked food, along with several sandwiches and desserts that will put a smile on your face. Clear Lake is home to the most family, friendly 4th of July event in the country. From the concerts in the park, the family carnival and family games, to the fireworks over the lake, you will fall in love with this charming community.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents showed me that travel had value at a young age. The memories of a family vacation are truly priceless. My father was a great example, as he showed me that hard work will pay off in ways that you never thought were possible. Dad told me early on, “You need to be 100 miles from home, to be considered an expert.” He WAS right.
