We had the good fortune of connecting with Sara Hawthorne and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sara, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
It’s very easy for me to get overwhelmed on a daily basis with client demands, family obligations, and finding time for my own self care. I used to work 7 days a week and often into the late evening hours. However, I found that even doing something you love can feel like a chore when you’re spending too much time at it. I find now that setting boundaries helps a lot in maintaining a healthy work life balance. Setting boundaries means letting my clients know their needs are important, but they will have to wait until office hours for a response. Using auto-responses on my emails has been a huge help! I need to be able to give myself at least one day a week where I’m not in front of my computer. On these days I’ll go to a park, the beach, hang out with friends and family, clean and organize my house and meal prep for the week. This allows me to come back to my work on Monday morning with less stress so I can better meet the needs of my clients. It’s very important that I have a clear head before I begin a consultation with a client. The process of reading one’s astrological horoscope takes time, and care and patience with this knowledge is of upmost importance.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m a Systems’ Approach Vedic Astrologer, Consultant, and Educator. I specialize in helping people with career, relationship, and health advice. I became interested in Vedic Astrology at a very young age through my father, David Hawthorne (Jyotish Bhanu & Jyotish Acharya) who began studying astrology long before I was born. Before I was born my parents moved from San Diego, CA to a small town of about 10,000 people in order to meditate for world peace. Fairfield, Iowa is a spiritual community that houses devotees of Transcendental Meditation, vegetarianism, and astrology. I was deeply influenced by this wonderful and eclectic community. Like many young people, I started reading horoscopes in newspapers and magazines, but it wasn’t until I was living in Los Angeles after college that I started to truly grasp what it was that my father did as a profession. I asked him to teach me and after some time studying, I started doing miniature consultations for people I was working with on movie sets (all people…especially actors want to know about themselves)! This was really the start of my career with astrology as I realized my passion for acting was being quickly overtaken by my passion for astrology. While my friends went to traditional graduate schools, I spent the next 3 years with my head in the books. All I wanted to study was astrology. Specifically, I started learning everything I could about Systems’ Approach to Vedic Astrology. This is the system my dad has been practicing for years and there are over 800 Vedic Astrologers practicing it. It is based on thousands of empirical studies done on charts rather than relying on intuition or preconceived notion of a person. Systems’ Approach to Vedic Astrology takes the guesswork, intuition, and contradictory principles out of the horoscope reading because it’s based on a scientific paradigm. On September 23rd, 2016 I was conferred the honorary title of Jyotish Saraswati by SIHA (Systems’ Institute of Hindu Astrology) and by Professor V.K. Choudhry of Gurgaon, India

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My first suggestion is to book a room at the Standard. Each room is it’s own private and charming little bungalow. You’ll feel like you’re on an exotic tropical island somewhere. The spa on location offers a giant and amazing steam room, massages, and even astrological readings. The Lido Bayside Grill also on site has delicious food and a great outdoor patio. After a relaxing night swinging under the stars by the fire pit in the courtyard, wake up early and head out for some sightseeing! Be sure to hit up The Pérez Art Museum and spend some time shopping and viewing the ever changing mural art in the Wynwood Arts District. Finish your evening at Perricone’s Marketplace & Cafe for the most delectable Italian food with a laid back ambience.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My father David Hawthorne, Jyotish Bhanu and Jyotish Acharya deserves the biggest shoutout for my success today. He has spent countless hours mentoring me to become a Systems’ Approach Vedic Astrologer. From day one he taught me how important it was to be independent. He also taught me that being your own boss is the ultimate goal in life. Nobody can tell you what to do, when you can take a vacation, or how much you can get paid when you’re the boss. He taught me that planning is important, knowledge is power, and working hard can get you where you want to go. To this day, he instills in me the confidence I need to know I’m on the right path and to just keep working hard at it. He has given me the tools I needed to have peace of mind and purpose in life and I’m forever grateful for having him as my guru.
