We had the good fortune of connecting with Sara Lowell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sara, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Having zero egos. I don’t need my clients to know all the things I am doing behind the scenes to save the day or to make their events run more smoothly. I get it done and make it happen. There is no need to tell the clients, “guess what I just did” or “the vendor is only doing this because of me” My goal is to get it done and keep my mouth shut. No need to be the hero. It’s not about us. It’s about the success of the event and it does not matter how we got there. Also, I spent 12 years of my life on the other side. I was a vendor. I will never forget how certain event planners treated me. Treating vendors with empathy and kindness comes naturally to me. After all, happy vendors make for a more successful event.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started many years ago dancing at Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. I spent 12 years of my life at the most lavish NYC events. I loved watching it all come together. I loved entering through the kitchen and being part of the “back of the house” madness. However, I also LOVED watching people’s faces when they entered the ballroom. I loved the behind-the-scenes more than anything. The setup, the crunch time. Making an entire production happen in 8 hours setup window. Event Production is magic! It’s like an entire Broadway production happening in a short window of time. The talent level of the lighting techs, the sound techs, and the musicians. It’s literally magic. After many years of dancing, I decided to cross over and work for planners. I realized almost instantly that my knowledge far exceeded anyone I worked for. The people I worked for were people who planned their own events and decided to be “event planners’ Nobody was coming into this industry with a decade of experience being on the other side. It’s for that reason I became successful. Granted, the people I worked for were making beautiful events, but my knowledge of timing and flow was something only years of experience could give you. I decided to take a risk and opened my own company.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would eat at The Cook and The Cork in Coral Springs. Other than that, lots of BBQ. We live on 2 acres and most of the fun we have is here. Coming from NY this is a hard question for me to answer. After 20 years here I am still looking for fun places to go to that are not clubs. Sorry, my answer to this is an epic fail. Fun for me is Honky Tonk dancing in Texas or listening to an amazing swing band in NYC or night markets in Asia. I have not found any fun here in Florida yet. Thank goodness I work every weekend!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I think I owe my success mostly to myself and my drive. However, I truly believe you are only as good as those you surround yourself with. With that being said, I owe my success to every vendor that makes me shine! They know who they are. I literally put all my trust in their hands and every weekend they go over and beyond for me. SHOUT OUT TO MY VETTED VIP VENDORS!
