We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Lucas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarah, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
As a self-taught Artist and a Video Creator, I have learned through many trials and errors that taking risk doesn’t always feel great, but it’s the gift you didn’t know you needed because of the learning experience it has to offer. We all grow through taking risks and it’s only when we take a leap of faith that we will truly know what we’re capable of. Taking risks pushed me to start my own YouTube channel back in 2015 where I decided to document my skills as an Artist; I had put off art for many years due to work and stress, but I finally wanted to dive back into it. Even though I had no idea what to expect and the fear of being judged online intimidated me, I enjoyed the process too much to let it go. To this day, taking that risk has given me a creative outlet that I will forever cherish and use as a stepping stone towards my goals.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a self-taught Artist and most of the art I create is inspired by my thoughts, dreams, movies, or books. In the early part of my learning stages as an Artist though, I mostly drew mandalas. Drawing mandalas helped me develop the focus and discipline I needed to bring my sleeping passions to life which was creating. I mostly turned to art because it helped me utilize my stress in a way that was encouraging rather than draining and it quickly became a source of happiness for me. The challenges I faced as I pursued my desires to create mostly came from people around me who didn’t believe in my efforts. Because the criticism came mostly from those closest to me, I would find myself hitting walls of doubt and as a result, I would lose interest in creating in general. After awhile though of working on my self-development surrounding myself with people who supported me, I eventually went back to making art and creating videos. From there, I gave myself room to become obsessive about my creative goals and saw my skills both as an Artist and a creator improve greatly.

The greatest lesson I’ve learned throughout all of this is to believe in myself. As cliché as it sounds, being your number one supporter is the best support you can give yourself because it will always be with you wherever you go. Challenging myself and working on my own self-development has also played an important role in who I am today. One of my favorite quotes to this day sums up my mindset in a nutshell; where there is a will, there is a way.

As I continue to discover myself as a creator, I hope to inspire others around the world to dig deep within themselves so that they too can wake up their sleeping giant and live a happier life doing what they love the most.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
South Miami beach, specifically the Art Deco area, because it’s the perfect hipster area to enjoy both during the day and night; the beach an added bonus! You can truly do so much just by foot but even then, you can easily rent a bike from one of the many bike stations around and cruise along the boardwalk or down Ocean Drive to get a view of the pastel retro buildings. There are also so many delightful restaurants nearby that offer a range of cuisines from Cuban food, Italian, Indian, and even Oriental; my favorite is the restaurant Havana 1957. For extra fun, there are numerous kiosks that offer a variety of fun day activities to do like Jet skiing, bus tours, driving exotic cars, or even paragliding; all being in such a close proximity to enjoy.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shoutout to my boyfriend who has always been by my side to encourage me to strive for greatness. His unconditional love, friendship, and support have guided me towards being the creator that I am today and love.

I would also like to shoutout to one of my favorite motivational speakers, Les Brown; it’s through his encouraging words that have helped me get through some of my toughest moments in life and his wisdom continues to push me forward.
