We had the good fortune of connecting with Satin Fye and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Satin, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I thought about starting my own business, money was definitely a leading lady in the decision-making process. Who doesn’t love the sound of financial freedom ringing in their ears, right? I’ve always been one to whip up some good food, and let me tell you, the compliments were never in short supply. My friends and family would take a bite and go, “Girl, you need to be selling this!” So, one day, I thought to myself, “Why not?” I’m always down for making a good coin, honey! Combining my culinary skills with my entrepreneurial spirit just made sense. It’s like mixing the perfect ingredients for a delicious success story!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My journey in the culinary world is quite the flavorful tale, intertwining my love for aviation with my passion for food. You see, I’m in aviation, nestled right in the heart of the hospitality and service industry. This career has a delicious correlation with food, as we all know. One of the coolest perks? I get to fly often. And when I do, I seize every chance to indulge in local cuisines. It’s not just for pleasure; these experiences are my muse, my inspiration. Imagine savoring a dish thousands of miles away and thinking, “How can I sprinkle a bit of this magic into my creations?”
What really gets my heart racing is the potential of bringing a piece of my culinary art into the skies. I’m buzzing about the relationships I’ve built, which could soon see my treats adding a dash of joy to those friendly skies. Talk about taking ‘Soulie Delight’ to new heights!
Word of mouth has been my golden ticket. I’m incredibly blessed with how people have embraced and shared my brand. But let’s keep it real; it’s not been a cakewalk. Balancing long flights with coming home to prep meals for clients, my feet barely get a break! This journey has schooled me in time management, the art of sacrifice for your passions, and the importance of pacing myself. It’s about savoring each step, taking one bite at a time.
What I want the world to know about Soulie Delight is that it’s more than just food; it’s a soulful mission. From garden to table, it’s about nourishing hearts and bellies alike, emphasizing that access to good food is a basic human right. And let’s not forget the essence of good black cuisine, from American flavors to the richness of the diaspora. My brand is a celebration of culture, a tribute to culinary diversity, and a testament to the joy of eating well. It’s not just a brand; it’s a movement, one delicious dish at a time.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When it’s time to show my best friend the time of their life, I believe in personalizing the experience to their taste, just like how we chefs love to cook! But given my historian’s heart and love for cultural roots, I’d definitely sprinkle our week with a journey through Miami’s vibrant black heritage.
First off, we’d kickstart our mornings with a hearty, black AF breakfast at a local gem where the grits are buttery, and the hospitality is as warm as the biscuits. Then, it’s off to savor some exquisite Haitian cuisine, diving into flavors that dance between tropical zest and savory earthiness.
But it’s not all about food (though it’s a big part!). As we meander through the city, I’d transform into the tour guide extraordinaire, leading them through the pulsating streets of Miami’s historically black neighborhoods. We’d visit landmarks and murals that tell the story of a resilient and vibrant community, from Little Haiti’s colorful streets to the historic corners of Overtown.
And let’s not forget a bit of sun-soaked relaxation! If they’re up for it, we’d venture to the adult side of Haulover Beach. It’s a place where the vibes are as free as the ocean breeze, and you can truly unwind and soak in the Floridian sun.
Throughout the week, we’d dive into the heart of Miami’s black diaspora, uncovering hidden gems and local favorites. From sipping on the rich, aromatic coffees of local black-owned cafes to dancing to the rhythms that echo through the streets, it’s all about experiencing the soul of the city. So, whether they’re in for historical enlightenment, culinary adventures, or just some good old beach time, I’ve got it all planned out for an unforgettable week!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First off, major love and props to my homegirl Tia, the founder and owner of JuiceDefined. She’s the one who really planted the seed by insisting, “Girl, you need to sell this!” Not only did she believe in me, but she also provided a spot in her juice bar to set up shop. Talk about a friend who elevates!
Then there’s my mom, my unwavering support system. She was right there from the start, helping me pack and deliver my culinary creations. And let’s not forget about my dad, my ever-reliable sous chef, stepping in during those big catering gigs to make sure everything ran smoothly.
Now, entering the scene of my ongoing saga is my current partner, Awopeju. As a business developer and former chef herself, she’s been nothing short of a dynamo, continuously pushing and expanding the boundaries of what I create.
I am truly blessed with so many incredible people in my corner. Each one of them has been a vital leg in the journey, supporting and uplifting me in various, invaluable ways. I’m here because of their love, encouragement, and the unique zest they’ve added to my life’s recipe. So here’s a big shoutout to each of them – they deserve all the credit and recognition in my story!
