We had the good fortune of connecting with Savanna Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Savanna, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk taking needs to be embraced when you want to do something great. I found a lot of times people view pursuing your dreams as a risk but in my opinion, the bigger risk is to regret what you didn’t do. Most of my life I was told that pursing a career in entertainment was “risky” and not easy. But I don’t need it to be easy.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a musician. I have a release coming out October 7th called Mamacita. This song was inspired by latin culture which I have a lot of admiration for. I love writing music and I write all of my own music I went through obstacles being young trying to get into the entertainment industry but I overcame them by developing the skills I felt I lacked. I didn’t like being super dependent on others. So when an engineer would do his job, I would. When a producer wouldn’t do his job, I would. Eventually I realized I was doing it all and I’m a perfectionist so I’m very hard on myself, but when I felt free to make what I want and had the skills to do it myself, I was proud.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Detroit, Michigan. I love art so I would suggest going to see Poor Man’s Art Collective. A lot of work I loved there was done by Takeisha Jefferson. I would also suggest going to the Detroit zoo. Given that Michigan is a very cold state, it’s cool to see the different animals that can live in this climate. Places I love to eat at are Olgas Kitchen and Motor city Soul Food. One beautiful site is the Detroit riverwalk. Right across the river is Canada.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My brother and best friend David. David is one of my biggest inspirations. From him I learned that anything I want in life I cannot only have but I’m also worthy of it. My whole life I knew I wanted to sing but I had sage fright and David told me “Savanna your so great the stage should be afraid of what you bring to it.”
