We had the good fortune of connecting with Savasha and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Savasha, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk has played one of the biggest roles in both my personal life and career. I think it’s really essential for moving forward and achieving new goals. As an artist, I feel you constantly need to be stepping out of your comfort zone, pushing your work a little bit more each time you create or you will feel redundant. I never feel satisfied if I’m not truly letting myself create what is authentic and boundary pushing to myself. Your artistic risks may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but you will garner much more authentic and satisfying success, which in my opinion, makes risk all the more important in my life!
Even as recently as the last year of my life, I realize my life was comprised solely of risks from moving to a city I had never been to before, to going solo with my music career as a lifelong big stage entertainer/sister duo, to becoming a Miami DJ, photographer and recently the founder of my new women’s group, Sav Women (IG @savwomen), an upscale invitation-only women’s game night. The idea certainly seemed silly to a few people—successful and high profile women from various professional industries dressing up, networking and mingling, drinking wine and playing card games and dominos… but one establishment took the risk to let me go ahead with this idea (huge shoutout to Avalon in Delray) and you know what? It was so successful that our next event for October is almost sold out! *If any women readers are interested, they can reach out to me at SAVWMN@gmail.com—I’d love to hear from them and get them on the wait list.
Because of risk, I’ve experienced exponential growth and opportunity in my music career, travelled with my music, became a resident DJ at over 5 different venues throughout south Florida and Miami, photographed for some of the biggest brands in the world, began charting Top 10-Top 20 globally each week with my weekly DJ mix releases (mixcloud.com/savasha), and founded Sav Women… all in one year! So, if it isn’t obvious by now, I am a huge fan of taking risks and encourage everyone to also take a few leaps in life!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Well, I’m a DJ, producer, singer/songwriter and photographer. I also manage monthly events through my new company Sav Women, which is an all-female, invitation-only, events company. Right now, I have been producing and recording a few music projects—some are collaborations and some are solely my own projects. I’ve also been planning October’s Sav Women Mixology Class and Game Night event as well as my usual DJing schedule around Miami and south Florida! I also create weekly hour long DJ mixes on Mixcloud, it’s like Soundcloud but for DJ mixes as well as DJing for a few radio shows/podcasts (most recently Sabea Podcast on iStreem Radio). I also just started creating monthly mixes for XMiX, a DJ music pool (for those not in the music industry, a DJ music pool is a library of music and remixes exclusive to DJs… essentially a global music shopping mall)
My friends always laugh because they say I do so many different things while also being active in the Miami music and nightlife scene, yet stay energetic and happy; they don’t believe that I sleep… which is partially true, I really don’t sleep a lot, ha! But, I also maintain a healthy and regimented lifestyle—which keeps me focused and energetic. I love the entertainment business and understand a huge portion of it means physically being out in the music scene, nightclubs, venues, but I avoid the excess partying, drinking, and the nightlife activities typical of this industry and I think that has really helped me keep up my energy, work quality and reliability.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is the perfect question for me because my sister always comes to visit and I try to create the ultimate south Florida week, so maybe I can entice her with this, ha!
I’m going to start with one piece of advice: when visiting Miami, especially if it’s your first time, don’t go absolutely crazy and dive right into the intense nightclub scene. You will burn out! Miami nightclubs will always win, and it will leave a not so great impression of Miami in your mind.. Miami is a marathon, you have to work your way up to the nightlife, ha!
I mostly enjoy walking around, trying random food spots, stumbling across cool museums, galleries and shops so my go-to places include Palm Beach with its hidden side streets and alleys (where you can find great shops and restaurants), Vizcaya and Wat Buddharangsi Buddhist Temple in Miami, as well as Midtown in Miami. I always suggest Red Reef Park for a beautiful and serene beach in Boca. Miami always has a lot of pop up walk through installations… which are amazing and so fun!
For more of a relaxed nightlife, there is an amazing speakeasy that I would probably be banned from if I revealed its location, ha! It’s one of my favorite spots in all of south Florida with its dark and moody ambiance, jazz music and amazing drinks… one hint I will give is there is a lot of red in and around it, so if you can find it, definitely stop in!
In terms of actual night clubs, I really don’t care where I am as long as I like the DJ. The ambiance of Space is always cool because it’s such an iconic venue so I would suggest a night (or morning) at Space just to say you went!
Regarding food… there is sooooo much to choose from! I’m personally a fan of more eclectic tasting menus, but it might not be everyone’s cup of tea, so to rattle off a more general list of places you can find in Miami, I would go with Stubborn Seed, Little Brittany, Mokota, Il Gabbiano, and for the most cozy late night pizza and wine: DC Pie Co. Also, if it’s any time after 12am, I am 100% getting nachos from Bodega in Miami Beach. I don’t think any of my friends appreciate the experience of Bodega nachos as much as I do, but I still force them to come eat with me regardless! I think the beauty of Miami and all of south Florida is that you can find a lot of hidden gems… the more you explore, the more you seem to find.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d say my mom has definitely given me the most support, mentorship and encouragement in my life so I will dedicate this interview to her! I still call her about twelve times a day, bouncing ideas off of her and she’s always the first person I know to call if I need a little encouragement. She’s been helping me with my career since I was little—helping to design stage costumes, makeup, and always being prepared in case there were any wardrobe or equipment malfunctions—not to mention the years of music, dance, and singing lessons—but most of all teaching me about business ethic and how to stay strong and confident in all that I do. I feel very lucky to have a mom who always picks up the phone, even if it’s in the middle of the night!
