We had the good fortune of connecting with Scott Hamler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Scott, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve wanted to start my own business for a long time. Since I can remember I wanted to be my own boss. I just needed a pathway. I got to the point in my life and career where the smarter move was to start my own business and not let my fate be decided by an employer.
What should our readers know about your business?
I own a digital marketing business with a focus on organic social media marketing. My business ties directly into my work with the community. I help small businesses & non profits get their messaging out and reach the community without breaking the bank like some more traditional forms of marketing/advertising. I got to where I am today in business through my network and community. I’m fortunate to have an amazing community in Charlottesville, VA who have been incredibly supportive of my business, and who I in turn try to give back as much as I can.
It’s not easy, I’d say, but it is the most fulfilling thing I’ve done in my professional career.
I’ve learned that you can get very far simply by being knowledgeable, likeable, and self-motivated.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There’s so much I’d want people check out in Charlottesville if they’ve never been here. I can’t name everything but here’s a short list: Check out the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center, walk the Downtown Mall and explore those businesses, head over to Ix Art Park & visit the Looking Glass immersive art museum (1st one in Virginia). There are too many restaurants to name, but some institutions are: Bodo’s Bagels, Mel’s Diner, Blue Moon Diner, and so many more.
Definitely drive out to some wineries. If not for the wine, the views are the best around. Eastwood, Blenheim, Mount Ida, Hazy Mountain, just to name a few.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I love this idea! I believe everyone that’s had any measure of success has had some sort of help along the way. For me, there’s many that I can point to, but I’ll name the 3 biggest influences: My Mother, Marnita – She game me all of the solid framework to be a successful person. I can point to many life lessons she’s given me that I apply daily.
My wife, Shelly – She started her own business when our 1st daughter was born over 5 years ago. I saw her grow her business from nothing into an incredible, thriving business, empowering other women and Moms to do the same.
My friend Antwon – Also an entrepreneur, we sat down before I started my own business and mapped out what it could look like. He’s one of my biggest champions, and I’ve learned a lot from his journey.
