Meet Scout Turner | Business Owner & Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Scout Turner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Scout, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risks has always been in my DNA. It is something that my mom taught me from an early age. When I was 12 she left her company (as a single mom) bought a small business, and ran that through 1 year non-compete until she could start her own manufacturing facility with her partners. It was a huge risk, and I saw that and felt that. But I also saw what it takes to be a strong entrepreneur and a strong woman from a very early age. That decision has made a huge impact on my life and my career. Going into my first business she took a risk on me to help me with the capital for my first business at the age of 15. I opened up a paint your own pottery studio in the town of Bell Buckle, TN where I went to school. I hired and managed employees, became a member of the local chamber of commerce, and worked when I wasn’t attending classes. That sparked my never ending passion for entrepreneurship and small business.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Currently my husband and I are operating our first business, a painting franchise. We pride ourself with our great culture. We are a family owned and operated business, with the backing and scalability of a franchise system. We treat our employees, painters, and customers like family and that is how we’ll always do it. My journey in entrepreneurship started when I was 15. I opened up my first business in the town where I went to high school. I managed the business, hired employees, worked in the business and went to school full time. I knew that was only the beginning of my journey in small business. I went on to major in business with a concentration in entrepreneurship in college, and was excepted into an entrepreneurial scholarship program. This further excelled my studies in small business and helped build my knowledge. I have learned that being an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart. It is high risk, but also high reward. I worked for a Fortune 500 for 7 years after I graduated college, and before I made the decision to leave my career and go full time back into small business. It was one of the hardest/easiest decisions I’ve made. Again, high risk with opportunity for high reward. We are opening up another business this year, and have plans to continuing growing our portfolio. I feel so blessed to get to do what I love every day, even on the hard days.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would start off with drinks at Dolly Parton’s rooftop bar The White Limousine in midtown. After, we would go to dinner at my favorite sushi spot O-ku. We would have to spend a full day bar hopping down Broadway and listening to all of the live music. Some of my favorite spots during the day are Casa Rosa, Rippy’s, Acme Feed & Seed, and the world famous Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge. Then we would go to dinner at Bourbon Steak at the top of the JW Marriott… For some of the best views in Nashville and the best Old Fashion’s. We would have to take a day trip out to Tim’s Ford Lake. The most beautiful lake in TN in my opinion, and only 1.5 hours from downtown Nashville! We’d also stay at the W Hotel and attend a day time pool party. Depending on the season we could go to a Titan’s game at Nissan Stadium, or a Predators hockey game at Bridgestone Arena. We’d see a concert at The Ryman Auditorium; one of the most famous, historical and intimate concert venues in Nashville. Another few of my local favorite spots to eat are Hall’s Chophouse, Riverhouse, and Hampton Social.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mom and my husband. My mom has supported and mentored me throughout my entire life. Without her mentorship and encouragement I don’t think I’d be where I am today. My husband is also my biggest fan, cheerleader and light in my life. His support has allowed me to pursue my passions and us to build the life we’ve always dreamed of.
