We had the good fortune of connecting with Selena Desinat and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Selena, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
My name is Selena Desinat but people call me “The Event Lady”, Selena, or mom. We live where people vacation, beautiful Fort Lauderdale, FL. My business is Event Planning/Coordinating, Producing, Designing, and Momtreprenuring.

Growing up I played sports, instruments, and joined every club you could think of. Which is probably why it is so hard for me to keep still now. Growing up with a mom who loved glitz and fashion it was only natural for me to gravitate towards design. It didn’t always start out that way, however. Choosing a career as a 2nd generation Mexican/Puerto Rican American meant your life wasn’t about you. We were taught that we had to set the example for the next generation. Most of our parents wanted us to be a lawyer or a doctor and if you had a career in anything but, you weren’t considered to be successful. As most of us did, I chose a safe career. Which was not the best choice for me. It held me back and stunted my growth.

Unsatisfied with life and tired of the same routine I started hosting events for family and friends at first. Something I have always done; I just wasn’t being paid for it! I had a corporate job that allowed me to incorporate structured plans to my design aspects creating systems, and processes to perform/plan at a much higher scale. Before I knew it, I was managing events with thousands of people in attendance. I worked at my corporate job while I did some traveling and I started to build out my business as my next step because I am not a person who can just sit still!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We are an event service provider who specialize in experience-based events Trending and Design. “We create the experience, so you can enjoy the experience.”

Time after time people tend to be too busy working on their events that do not actually get to enjoy them. We want to change that! We want it to be our job to handle all the moving parts of your event so that you can kick back and enjoy the time with your family and friends. Connecting with us means you have a full-service event plan/coordination option where all you have to do is pay and show up.

Considering we officially started our business at the start of COVID things were very uncertain. Trying to get ahead of things we decided at that time it would be best to invest in space as well to accommodate smaller events. Finding space for our regular events was hard enough so we went for it. For some time, we went between the venue space (Scarlet’s Event House) while still planning and producing our mobile events. Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances with the zoning we had to shut the space down but continued to produce our mobile events. One of the causes and effects of COVID is that we all had to hit restart on some part of our lives. We are currently keeping our eye out for a new space, but we continue to do mobile events with Trending and Design as our front runner. We have expanded our territory and resources in different areas. Being mobile has given us the flexibility to create space anywhere without the hefty overhead!

We look forward to another great year of beautiful celebrations and many more to come!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We live and work in Florida! That alone is a vibe people! Everyone is moving here if they haven’t already. For the most part I enjoy my time at home when I can but if I am stepping out, our city has a lot to offer. There are so many places you can grab a bite to eat, have a coffee, or just sightsee. enjoy art, not to mention, we have the beach just minute away. I love being outdoors and finding hidden spots to soak up some sun. If there are food trucks, I am there! I love places where we can get street food and there are a few farmers markets out here that don’t disappoint and are vegan friendly for my people who don’t like beef. Occasionally I need a cold drink, there are a few places in the art district that serve up a really good time. Call me if you need a friend who is not scared of adventure and boat rides. You can always invite me, I am there, as long as I am not working of course!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

A huge shoutout to everyone for who believed in me and my craft and kept pushing me to take a chance on me! I want to shout out to my clients for trusting me with their money and allowing me to be a part of making their dreams come true. My staff and vendors, because baby, there are days I would not have survived without them. My husband for all his support through it all. He gets the pleasure of dealing with me at my high stress moments. My kids for keeping me young and my ideas fresh. They do not hesitate to tell me when something isn’t working out. You must love their honesty.
