We had the good fortune of connecting with Shaketra Dorsey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shaketra, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The decision to embark on the journey of starting my own pastry business was born out of a passion for baking and a deep-seated desire to share my culinary creations with the world. As a Pastry Chef, I found immense joy in experimenting with flavors, textures, and presentation, constantly pushing the boundaries of traditional pastry. The thought of turning this passion into a business germinated as I received overwhelmingly positive feedback from friends and family who sampled my treats. The prospect of creating a brand that encapsulated my unique approach to pastry, combining innovation with a commitment to quality ingredients, fueled my entrepreneurial spirit. The desire to bring joy to others through the delectable experience of my pastries became the driving force behind the business endeavor. The challenges inherent in launching and sustaining a business were daunting, but the belief in my product and the satisfaction derived from turning a cherished hobby into a profession propelled me to take the leap. With a blend of creativity, determination, and a love for pastry, the decision to start my own business became a natural evolution, promising a sweet journey ahead.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Thank you for the opportunity to share the story of my pastry business. What sets me apart is my unwavering commitment to crafting not just pastries, but experiences. I pride myself on the perfect balance of innovation and tradition, creating unique flavors that tantalize the taste buds while respecting the timeless art of pastry-making. With making the custom gourmet chocolates or even coming up with fun macaron flavors to get people to enjoy them I am all about having fun with this. The journey to where I am today was anything but easy; challenges were abundant, but each hurdle became a stepping stone. Being a Chicago native and I have only been in Miami for 3 years now and decided to start my business here. Finding the different farmers markets that may help me consistently show what I have to offer to the community is probably my biggest challenge because they can be hit or miss. Trying to find the right marketing strategy has been a challenge. Perseverance, a passion for excellence, and an unyielding belief in our vision were our guiding lights. Every setback taught me resilience and every success fueled my determination. I’ve learned that success is not just about the destination but the journey, and I cherish every milestone achieved. My brand is more than just a business; it’s a narrative of passion, dedication, and the joy I find in delighting my customers. I want the world to know that behind every pastry is a story, and each bite is a chapter in my journey of creating moments that linger in the hearts and palates of those I serve.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For an unforgettable weeklong experience in the vibrant city of Miami, I would curate a dynamic itinerary that combines the best culinary delights, eclectic entertainment, and picturesque locales. To kick off the adventure, we’d start with brunch at the iconic Big Pink, savoring their mouthwatering pancakes and enjoying the lively South Beach atmosphere. Afterward, a stroll along the iconic Ocean Drive would immerse us in the Art Deco charm of the area. For a taste of Miami’s diverse culinary scene, dinner at Versailles in Little Havana would be a must, indulging in authentic Cuban flavors. A visit to the Wynwood Walls, an outdoor street art museum, would offer a visually stunning experience, followed by a night of dancing and live music at the lively Ball & Chain. Midweek, a day trip to the scenic Everglades for an airboat tour to spot alligators and explore the unique ecosystem would provide a thrilling adventure. We’d cap off the week with a relaxing day at Key Biscayne’s Crandon Park Beach, soaking in the sun and enjoying water activities. To conclude the trip, dinner at Joe’s Stone Crab, a Miami institution, would be the perfect way to savor the local seafood. Throughout the week, we’d encounter the diverse and lively people that make Miami so special, creating memories that last a lifetime.
