We had the good fortune of connecting with Shaneel Simpson Gayle and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shaneel, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Over time, my work-life balance has undergone a significant transformation. As a single mother when my first child was born, I initially focused intensely on my career, fearing any perception of inadequacy. Unfortunately, this commitment led to neglect during the crucial first bonding year, resulting in severe burnout and depression. Recognizing the toll, I contemplated stepping away from the creative agency world, understanding the importance of a balanced approach that prioritizes both professional success and the well-being of my family. This experience has shaped my perspective, emphasizing the need for a more harmonious integration of work and personal life.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a 36-year-old creative marketer, storyteller, and childhood cancer advocate with a robust background in partnering with local franchise giants like Redbull and Pepsi Jamaica. My journey in digital marketing began during the era of MySpace and hi5, where I found my niche marketing local musicians through their social profiles. Self-learning this trade has since evolved into a decade-long career, establishing my own digital marketing agency. With a focus on not just catering to big corporations but extending my expertise to support small businesses, I contribute through consultation efforts to help build and strengthen their foundations. My diverse experience reflects a commitment to both professional excellence and making a positive impact in my community.
In my career journey, what sets me apart is the tenacity to thrive in the face of adversity. Starting as a single mother, I navigated the creative marketing world with a relentless passion. What I’m most proud of is overcoming challenges, notably battling burnout and depression that stemmed from an initial imbalance between career and motherhood. The path wasn’t easy, but I persevered by reevaluating priorities and embracing a more holistic approach. The lessons learned include the importance of resilience, self-care, and fostering a supportive work environment.
My first born’s journey (Nyla) was an extraordinary one courage and resilience, a testament to her role as a true warrior Princess. In the summer of 2019, our lives changed as she faced the challenge of cancer. Throughout those four years, Nyla showed me the art of standing tall, facing adversity without fear. She became my beacon of hope.
To ensure her well-being, I made the difficult decision to step away from my career, navigating the struggles of making ends meet and providing a stable home for us. Nyla’s strength, radiance, and respect touched many lives in Jamaica, leaving an indelible mark on our community.
In 2022, amidst the challenges, I found love and happiness, getting married and welcoming my second child, a son. Nyla, ever selfless, prayed for my joy and the family I had always desired.
In March 2023, Nyla, the warrior Princess, left us, but her cherished memories endure. Her legacy lives on, a reminder that even in the face of adversity, love, strength, and hope prevail.
Today, I stand as a testament to the power of determination and the ability to rise above personal and professional setbacks. I want the world to know that my brand and story embody resilience, creativity, and a commitment to overcoming obstacles. My journey reflects the strength that can be found in vulnerability and the transformative power of embracing life’s complexities.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Kingston (Jamaica) offers a blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, providing a diverse range of opportunities for creating unforgettable moments with friends.
I would take her to my favourite spots, Oceano restaurant for Asian and continental dining.
For drinks, we would go to the local watering hole in new Kingston called Jangas.
Then to make better bond moments at Pure Chocolate inOcho Rios by making our own chocolates.
Following we must do a staple beach trip to a pristine and clear crystal waters spot in Draxhall called The Cove or by the white sands beach of The Sugarpot Beach in Rio Nuevo Bay in St Mary.
To complete the trip, a short stay in a beautiful Portland villa and visit local spot at Boston Jerk Centre. Then end with a pristine dining experience at the Trident Hotel.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to dedicate my shoutout to another close colleague of mine that became a dear friend. Though she is unsure of it, Tanhoi Sinclair, an amazing marketing genius and mother has helped me to recognise my worth and growth in the world that has also shaped me to want more from my career and elevate myself into more than I ever imagined.
