We had the good fortune of connecting with Shannan Bethel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shannan, why did you pursue a creative career?
This has been a dream of mine since I was child. I spent hours watching makeup videos and then trying to recreate the look. Each week I would buy a new product and see if I could recreate a look I found on YouTube. I knew this was something I was great at and wanted to make a career out but it took me awhile to take the risk and become a professional makeup artist. During the pandemic I was pursing a psychology degree at FIU. I enjoyed my classes and what I learned. I started to take my classes online and that changed everything. I spent a lot of time alone and thinking about how I wanted to spend my life. Would working in the mental health field fulfill me ? I couldn’t decide but to pass time while being home I started to create makeup looks and it all started to align. I knew from that moment I wanted a career in the beauty field and never looked back.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I got to where I currently am by being consistent and putting myself out there. It was far from easy, probably one of the hardest things that I’ve learned so far. It takes a while to understand how to color-match a client. to better understand it. I had to offer free faces and I spent weeks doing that. I also had to do some research on the color wheel. Now I am confident in the makeup services that I provide but I still have so much more to learn. This journey has taught me to be patient and how beneficial the power of networking is. Give yourself grace while learning a new skill and also put yourself out there. My brand is something that I can’t wait to see at its full potential, I’ve made so many strides throughout the years. I had no clue ill have the opportunity to work on photoshoots, weddings, and even give lectures in school. I am pride of what I’ve been able to accomplish, Taking that risk was something I am glad I did
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Some of my favorite things to do on the weekend are going down to Miami Beach and Roller-skate. I have a few friends who like to skate so we go as often as we can. I am a big foodie, I love to eat at Moshi Moshi, talking tacos and Dunkunoos. Miami has so much to do but I find myself in Wynwood hanging out at the bars and clubs and also because I have some friends who are part of a DJ collective called Cush Creations that DJ at some pretty cool places in that area.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shoutout my friend Shawn he passed away in 2022. He was one of the first people I told about my interest in makeup and immediately supported my decision. He gave me great advice and pushed me to make this my career.
I also want to shout out my friends Melo , Jasmine , Jonelle and chels. They’ve been here since the beginning and they saw me before I could see my self as Makeup artist. They put up with so much of my compliments and worries. They kept my head up when I couldn’t do it myself and I appreciate that so much.
I want to shoutout Andi who is the owner of The Luxury Club and Sabrina known as Theprettiogist. They helped me start my career and shaped how I do makeup. Thank you for all the lessons you’ll taught me. It help elevate my craft In so many ways.
Lastly I like to give thanks to the lord for blessing me with this talent. I give him all the glory.
