We had the good fortune of connecting with Shaqualyn Shedrick and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shaqualyn, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Having a growth mindset is the reason I can call myself successful today. Over time and from experience, I have adapted the routine of consistency + discipline= results. Day in and day out, I constantly remind myself that there is always room to grow.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I graduated from FAMU with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and a Minor in Psychology in 2015. I used my degree to work at a state Law Enforcement agency in Tallahassee, FL, for 3.5 years. I made the hardest decision of my life to leave my salary-paying job with benefits in November of 2019 to go full-time in developing a concrete foundation of She Academy. It shook everyone because it has never been done by anyone in my family or my circle of friends.
I learned to do hair at the age of 13 and hustled my way through college, so having the talents and time to pay my bills was the least of my worries. I used to leave work at 9 pm, rush home for a 9:30 hair appointment, finish around 12 or 1 am, wake up for a 5 am hair appointment, and make it to my state job at 11 am more days than I can remember. Customer service is my specialty. Helping women gain their confidence is my passion. I developed my work ethic from watching my parents and grandparents, so it has always been in me. No one ever said it would be easy; the outcome just had to be worth it.
That crazy schedule I operated on taught me how to balance my books, my friends forced me to create boundaries, then I met a few people in Tallahassee who wanted to see me win and begin guiding me. Enrolling in therapy along my journey has also been very helpful. I operate full-time with She Academy and part-time as a hairstylist.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We love to eat and implement self-care. I’d take my best friends to Railroad Square Craft house for brunch, go thrifting at a few of my favorite spots, bowling at Seminole Bowl, and finish with a 60-minute massage at Fuji Spa.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, I have to thank God for handpicking me to fulfill my role and instilling in me a clear vision!! I have a village that is valued at over a million lbs of gold! My friends are my family and have supported me in ways they can’t even imagine. My parents prepped me with all the tools as a little girl to take on the world. My siblings and nephew are my biggest motivators. My person is in my corner and encourages me to challenge myself daily. Every single person that has added value or a lesson along my journey thus far is appreciated. My team, our lovely interns and volunteers. Lashawn Gordon has been a pleasure to have in my life. My experience at FAMU shaped me into the woman I am today! And most importantly, my entire village in Miami, FL, Thank you!
