We had the good fortune of connecting with Sharley Dejesus and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sharley, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
One of my favorite quotes of all time is ” lo que es para ti, es para ti “. It means ” What is meant for you, is meant for you.” My mother says it all the time when speaking to me about my goals, successes, and what doors might open up in the future for me. For me, this quote holds a tremendous amount of meaning because I have seen firsthand how it has manifested itself in my life. It has altered the way I perceive risk-taking and has opened me up to make difficult choices. What I admire about this specific quote is how straightforward it is. It’s simple enough to remember and is easily applicable to most of life’s situations.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Well, like Keith Haring once said, “Art is for everybody.” Everyone has different styles of art and that’s what makes us all unique. I think what sets me apart is the way I paint or draw eyes. What excites me most is the fact that someone else can see my ideas on a canvas. I’m most proud of my art style and when people recognize it. It took many failed attempts to be where I am today. I struggled to find my own art style and be satisfied with it for a long time. One lesson that I learned along the way is to appreciate and admire peoples diverse art styles while staying true to my own.

I want the world to know that it’s important for each one of us to be unique and be accepting of different art styles.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
That’s an interesting question. One place that will always be on the list is visiting Miami River Cafe and Miami River ll Mexican Cuisine for their $1.50 taco special. We would pick up some coffee and donuts from The Salty Donut. Afterwards, we’d visit the Wynwood Walls to see all the wonderful murals. The next day, we would visit Brickell City Center for its amazing design and visuals. On the final day, we could go to book shopping at Books and Books in Coral Gables. Ending the day with some delicious arepas from La Latina.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mother is someone who I wish to nominate. She truly is an amazing artist, who unfortunately, doesn’t have time to sit down and paint anymore. Everything I know about art and painting is owed to her. She’s my number one inspiration and the only person who has shown unconditional support. Since I can remember, she has always encouraged me to create and I am beyond grateful for that. I would also like to give special thanks to my second grade art teacher, who introduced my class to lino-art and played The Monkees for us while we did classwork.
