We had the good fortune of connecting with Shatawn Reid and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shatawn, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
There is one principle that I have adapted into my life in order for me to step out of my comfort zone. That principle is, “In order to be someone you have never been before, you have to do something you never did before.” I have lived my life as a shy individual that enjoyed being in the background. However, what I had to understand is that God had other plans. He has put me in different situations that required me to step out of that comfort zone and, I can honestly say, it has made me a better person. It has made me stronger, wise, and has given me more confidence. And it is all because I did something that I could never have seen myself doing. Stepping out on faith and believing in yourself even when no one else believes in you. So anytime I sense fear coming, I remember that principle and it reminds me that I have to be bold.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

I am currently an owner of Purposefully Write Publishing which is designed to, not only publish books and content for myself, but for other individuals that want to publish content that helps to uplift and inspire others. I am the owner of the brand / movement called InHERitance. This company started off as an idea for a planner designed for women and God gave me the vision to take it further. The goal for InHERitance is to provide women and girls with the opportunity to know that they have a purpose upon this Earth and that she should embrace that InHERited favor that lies upon HER and within HER. I emphasized the word ‘HER’ because I want women and girls to know what they have inside of them was transmitted to them by the Creator Himself. I started it as a clothing brand, however it will evolve into much more. I am a writer as well as a Spoken Word poet. My first published poetry book is called Pen…Poetry…Purpose that was released on February 22nd, 2022. It contains a collection of poems that I have written over the years that can relate to anyone no matter your race or background. I got to the point that I am because of God. I know that sounds a bit cliché but it is the truth. As a child, I watched as my family did what they needed to do to make ends meet. I told myself that I didn’t want to be that way when I became an adult. I want to be, and have been designed to be, the person to break the generational curses that are in my family. I am looking to leave a legacy; leave a great name upon the earth. I have experienced my share of challenges because this has never been done before in my family. In addition to that, I suffered from low self-esteem, depression, and suicidal thoughts in my life, There was a point in my life where I didn’t think I was worth anything, BUT GOD! He would show me that He created me for greater by placing me in positions that caused me to show off the greatness within me. I started writing poetry because of my depression and He placed me in the position to be on stages with some of the best. Throughout my journey thus far, I have learned that as strong as you believe that you are, you are so much stronger. God created us that way. None of us are here by mistake, it is purposed in our very DNA. And as hard as it may seem to walk in that purpose in your heart, you have a God who walks with you every step of the way. I would encourage any and everyone, if you have a dream…go for it. I don’t care how difficult it may appear to get it done or how many other people are doing it….DO IT! You aren’t like anyone else and your journey will not be like anyone else. Don’t shut yourself down before you give yourself the chance to blossom.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If one of my best friends was coming to Miami, I would take them to a few of my favorite places to eat like Rendezvous Bar & Grill. Maybe take the drive to West Palm Beach for the day to check out Voodoo Bayou, a Louisiana style restaurant. We would check out some brunch spots such as Keke’s Breakfast Cafe in Boca Raton and Untoasted in Hallandale Beach. I am not a person who goes clubbing but I do enjoy good music. I will take them to the NYSW Jazz Lounge in Ft. Lauderdale.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this interview to three women in my life that have been encouraging, uplifting, and inspiring in this point of my life. They are my friends, my sisters, my village, and a big part of my community. Their names are Alice Beverly, Guerdy Jean-Gaines, and Valencia Taylor. Thank you ladies for being there for me when I need you and motivating me to be great.
