We had the good fortune of connecting with Sheena Brook and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sheena, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
Choosing to be myself and to live as authentically as possible is probably single most important choice in my life. It was difficult and painful to come out as a lesbian. In the process I lost my job, some extended family and friends. But, in the long run that was so defining and worth it. It taught me to be proud of who I am and to surround myself only with people who bring joy to my life. Which is, in my opinion, true success.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve done many genres of music, a lot of trying and failing and getting up again. I’m actually really proud of that. I’ve discovered and rediscovered my own sound a few times. Music is so subjective to the listener and the creator. I’ve just released my first single and music video, “Bad Bitches Like Me” in over 2 years. I have another 4 Pop singles ready to be released each month following. I’ve also found a lot of joy in creating really fun and safe places to play for other artists. I’ve hosted songwriter shows to highlight women and the LGBTQ+ community. I don’t have the ability to change the whole music industry and fix the way women and Queer individuals might feel marginalized, but I can definitely create a great and safe space for others to see their talent!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I do love a good ole fashion all day beach day. I like to set up in front of Cabanas at the Diamond head and walk up from the sand for a frozen drink and some live music. and then come home and head to dinner in the Golf Cart to one of my favorite restaurants,Bay Front Bistro. Next day I would probably go Kayaking at Koreshan State Park. It’s shady and gorgeous!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My wife Summer When we first met I was convinced I couldn’t entertain for 3 hours by myself, then she booked me a gig and I did. I wanted to become a better songwriter, she bought me a ticket to Nashville for a workshop. I didn’t think I would make it though even one round of voice auditions, I made it through 6. She has always been behind me supporting me. I never had someone just assume I would be successful. Without even a second thought she has pushed me to be the best version of myself in my career and in life.
