We had the good fortune of connecting with Shelissa Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shelissa, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Starting Its So Johnson Design allowed me to rediscover my love for creating and designing. It helped me to regain my identity after being diagnosed with postpartum anxiety. Crafting and learning to test new techniques gave me something to look forward to, and helped to build back my confidence in knowing who I was outside of being a new mom.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
What sets me out from others is my willingness to teach as I go along. I don’t believe that any of us can be where we are without some blue print from someone before us. I love to share my final products with fellow crafters, but I most enjoy showing my process and helping along their journeys. I am most proud of my ability to test myself and my limits. Im able to take something from an idea or concept a client isn’t too clear on, and I can bring that to life as a memorable gift or celebration for them. It can be just as challenging to explain my visions, or ideas but the trust I gain with past work and the relationships I build with each client over sights that challenge.
Lessons I have learned that have brought me as far as I have come is to trust the process. Not just in the process to my products outcomes, but the overall growth of my business- nothing is going to happen over night, as much as we feel like it should some times. We look at what others are doing now in this moment and compare ourselves, but we have to remember they didn’t get there yesterday, and our time is building up to be there too.
I want the world to know that Its So Johnson Design was built from a passion and hobby, and turned into a brand, a business that now supports other small businesses and mothers in their needs. You too can take your passions and turn them into your hustle and soon into your empire.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Being that I am an Island Girl, we would spend most of the time at the beach, or on a boat sailing along the coast. There will definitely be drinks flowing the whole time- in tumblers made by none other than Its So Johnson Design of-course. After a day on the water, we would go to Joy’s Roti Delight in Lauderhill to enjoy some curry and a cold Carib. The music, atmosphere and the vibes would take us well into the evening as we listen to Soca and Wine the night away.
To be honest, this visit is most probably planned around Miami Broward Carnival time, so this would all be during our cool down vacation portion after the week of parties and carnival festivities.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband deserves every bit of credit to my starting Its So Johnson Design. He not only encouraged me to create this business, but he encourages and takes full interest in my designs and products. When I doubt myself, hes there to remind me of my passions and pushes to me to continue.
