We had the good fortune of connecting with Shezetta Morris and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shezetta, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk can be a challenging word for many people. But I believe that risk is really the trial and errors of life that help you develop the experiential wisdom to move forward. People think about alot of things. People want to do alot of things. But most people never get to the point where they feel like they can take the risk to do something. Many times people are afraid to jump over the risk bridge in order to accomplish something. But the risk itself is the fuel that helps build confidence, establishes fortitude and strength in a person.
The phrase, you will never know until you try it – that statement is true. You can have a book knowledge or observation about something. But you never really know it until you experience it……DO IT!
What should our readers know about your business?
I am the Owner of Shezetta Morris, Coaching, Consulting and Counseling. I think what sets me apart is my ability to engage in a diverse type of population. I love people and I love learning about people and what they desire to accomplish. It’s almost like their passion feeds my passion and I’m all game to jump in an help them see what they are dreaming about.
I run this practice individually so it means that I do everything. I have a degree in business, psychology and clinical mental health counseling so all of my varied careers and experiences allow me to be the entrepreneur that I am. I know alot about establishing and running a business and what I don’t know, I know how to find out.
Building a business was not easy. It’s still not easy. At the end of the day, I am responsible for making it happen and for making sure there is cash flow. I work more hours for myself than I would for any other person. But I wouldn’t trade it for anything. It’s different when you are working and building for yourself. I accept the hardships that come with building my business because I know it’s teaching me how to do things better. When I hit challenging times, I make sure I garner support from my family and mentors. Also take time to do some self-care. And that’s important because most times, people will want to throw in the towel when things get hard. I take some time away to remind myself of my why. And then I take a nap. It’s funny but it works. Most times, when I wake up from a nap, I feel better and the solution that I needed, comes to me. And I get back to work.
Lessons that I continue to learn is that, there is always another way…..so don’t let rejection ruin your life. Another lesson, expect rejections to come. Build your self-esteem to understand that rejection is not always about someone rejecting you. Sometimes, they just don’t need your service at this time. So build your self-confidence so you can handle the rejections that are coming…..because they will come.
What I want people to walk away with when they engage me and my brand is this…….I want people to feel that they can do anything that they purpose their mind to do. Given time and engagement, my hope is to help people define their purpose and go after it with everything they have in them.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So if one of my friends were visiting for a week, I would immediately want to take them to the Keys. My greatest experience of being in Florida has been experiencing the openness of the keys. The restaurants along the drive down to key west are amazing.
I would stop along the local shops and spend time experiencing the eateries with my friends. Stop by a karaoke experience and sit on the water and enjoy the music.
Ultimately we would check into one of the resorts and experience the environment of rest and relaxation along the water. And that would be our week.
I say that because most of my friends would be coming to get a break from their busy Northeast lives.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are several. But my focus will be on my family. There support is what keeps me focused on my purpose and allows me to be as creative and risky as I can be. The environment that is created by my family is priceless. I could not do anything that I do without them.
