We had the good fortune of connecting with Shirley Moss and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shirley, what do you attribute your success to?
I recognized what I think of as my gift, which is patience. I then used that gift to become The Chainmaker. There are lots of jewelers who are so much more skilled than I am. My ability to hand link chains is what sets me apart. I consider it a meditation in metal, not tedium.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think besides patience, I’m somewhat stubborn, or so I’ve been told. I’ve used both along with a strong work ethic from my parents, to not give up making a living from my chain work. My customer service is what I’m most proud of. I’m been making and selling handmade chains for 52 years. I never charge to repair or buff any of my work. Last week a got a chain purchased 32 years ago. I was able to send it back not as good as new, but pretty close. The woman was thrilled and it didn’t cost her anything.
The old saying, “You eat an elephant one bite as a time ” is something I remind myself of when I feel overwhelmed. It helps me put things into perspective and keep on going.
I want people to feel the love and pride I put into every one of my chains. When I finish a chain I hold it tight and say thank you. It really is a labor of love.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Port Townsend, Washington. It’s a victorian seaport. When I have guests, we walk the beaches, eat at some of the wonderful restaurants depending on their desires and chat. I love sitting having tea looking out my window at the Strait of Juan de Fuca. I would also take them to the Port Townsend Food Bank on a Wednesday when we feed our community. I’ve been the volunteer Manager for years. I would introduce them to my crew and let them help feed all the clients.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My grandfather, Guy Leander Kinney. He made and left behind handmade chains that were gifted to my Mom. They were the beginning of my chain work.
