We had the good fortune of connecting with ShortyDooWop and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi ShortyDooWop, what do you attribute your success to?
I think being in control of everything has made me successful. I know some DJs that hire marketing companies to control their social media, some have booking agents that take a percentage. I like to be in control of all my bookings and all my marketing because I don’t miss opportunities that way. My clients know they are getting me and the relationship is authentic. My posts are authentic. I don’t by followers, likes, or views. I am an organic brand.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I grew up on 80s & 90s hip-hop and R&B outside the home and Latin music inside the home, so I was always influenced by music. One of my strengths is networking so I talked to the write people to guide me along my passions. I really started as an opener and sometimes very low paying or free gigs to gain my experience. Once I got tight on the ones and twos is when I was able to do bigger gigs and charge accordingly. It wasn’t just handed to me. I made many mistakes at the beginning, but I was able to overcome and build my name. Although I am an open format DJ, I had to find what my comfortable lane was and cater to that. I can throw an amazing throwback party!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Sunday I would do brunch at BB Sundays in Ft Lauderdale, on Monday probably do the sightseeing stuff like Bayside Marketplace and Wynwood Walls, on Tuesday we eating and listening to great music at 1-800-Luckys in Wynwood, on Wednesday is a good day to check out the outlet malls (Dolphin Mall and Sawgrass Mall), on Thursday we definitely hitting up the I Love R&B Thursdays party at The Joint of Miami, on Friday and Saturday there is just so much to choose from depending on what is going on in Miami, But in the mornings definitely hitting Hollywood Beach and stopping buy Juice Juice Bar for breakfast,
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The beginning of my career is definitely due to DJ Griff Gotti and DJ Smash who took me in under their Thursday night team at a party called SoulFly in Fort Myers, FL. That is where I got my DJ lessons and they gave me my first residency. I also got into radio, as that is my first passion, and I owe that recognition to First Lady Niki at Fly 98.5FM in Fort Myers, FL. She mentored me in the radio game and gave me my first guest daily spot on her show doing a hip-hop entertainment news segment called Word On The Curb. And lastly, my inspiration in this whole entertainment business is Angie Martinez. I look up to her whole career as inspiration.
