We had the good fortune of connecting with Sip Halbertsma and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sip, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I think this is one of the questions most important to our generation. A good work life balance will ensure better results in the future. Personally I divide my time 50/50 between Miami where I work, and Amsterdam where my son lives. I truly believe that spending 50% of my time full time with him allows me to have a stronger presence at work.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started my career in yachting at a young age, without really nowing which market I was tapping in to. Together with a friend we just had the dream of selling boats, which later grew in to bigger yachts. Late 2014 I made a painful, but in the end good decision and stopped working with my client and met with the share holders of Feadship.
They gave me the chance at a young age to join the company, which kick started of my career in Europe, The Netherlands. In 2018 a big opportunity came up to become Commercial Director at our American office, but it would mean a relocation to South Florida, which has become my home over the last 6 years.
While i’m always travelling a lot (120 days+ per year) I found Miami a great place to ground and enjoy my life. Only recently i have decided to also spent more time in Amsterdam.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For a vacation I always advice my friends to stay 2-3 days in Brickell and spent the rest on the beach to enjoy our amazing weather.
There are so many cool things to do in and around Miami! Of course do the obvious and enjoy the amazing restaurants in Brickell, take every tourist to Sugar on a Thursday to enjoy the view and feel the Miami lifestyle.
Drive to key largo (or even one of the closer keys) and do a cool sunset paddle board tour, the wild live is amazing and it’s such a nice break away from the city.
Go to Key Biscayne, on the crandon park beach, and have a paella on the beach with your family from Open Seas.
Definitely spent an afternoon in Design District, do some shopping, amazing dinner and great people watching.
Last but not least, rent a boat! Go see Stilltsville, do some watersports. Go for a swim behind Key Biscayne and let them drop you off at Seaspice or Kiki on the River for some wines and a great dinner to end your week in Miami.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I think my Shoutout should definitely go out to, the “De Vries Family” share holders in Feadship, who believed in me at a very young age. For almost 10 years they have been very supportive, and I couldn’t have been where I am today without their on going support.
