We had the good fortune of connecting with Skylar Fleming and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Skylar, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Essentially it all started in 2015 after a visit to an estate sale where I found a handful of plaster molds used for slip casting. I had studio space where I knew there were kilns around. I started playing around combining pieces of the molds, vintage doll parts, animals etc.. making fun obscure and some may say macabre artworks. I fell in love! So I just kept creating pieces and people started buying so I figured may as well start a business and see how it goes!

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Not sure what sets me apart from others, as art is so diverse and multifaceted which makes that a difficult question. I am however, proud of the craft in which I put each piece together. I’m super excited about being invited to participate in group shows and finally got in to a gallery that was on my bucket list! I got to where I am today by perseverance and having an art community to get positive feedback and making art for myself. I’d say it’s no easy task by any means, I run a landscaping business in the daytime so having steady income definitely helps with the stressors of not having to worry about selling art to make ends meet. Which for me keeps making art fun! I want everyone to know not so much more about me but that art doesn’t happen overnight for most of us and to keep learning everything you can, be a sponge, try harder do better.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well being in Seattle that might depend on the season! Let’s start by planning on checking out some art around the city. Then head out of the city and go check out some gorgeous waterfalls. Would definitely plan on dinner at a dumpling spot(many to choose from but Din Tai Fang is my fav) get a Lao burger from Taurus ox for lunch one day and going to need some sushi at some point as well. There’s always fun night life but hit up some favorite bars in Belltown and then try to catch some live music which is usually easily done. If there’s enough time head out to the Olympic peninsula and check out the rainforest and camp on the beach!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d love to thank my family, friends, fiancé, the art community and collectors for all the support, planet earth and all of its offerings for all the endless inspiration.
