We had the good fortune of connecting with Sofia Garcia Sanchez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sofia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I think I’ve always wanted to do big things; both for myself and for the people around me. I’ve always been into creative and artistic pursuits, so Photography, for me, was a step in the right direction towards creating a reality where I would get to be expressive, but also have super dynamic days. To be honest, I don’t think I thought I would be a full time freelancer, a business owner, or ‘my own boss’ this early on. It wasn’t until I saw the way actual businesses in my industry were being run that I got the idea to start taking on more of the administrative aspects of it. I took note of what I liked, what I didn’t, and thought that I could do it in a way that felt more fun for me and for the people I chose to work with.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
So I’m a Conscious Photographer, which really means I’m Spiritual AF. It’s cool if you are not, but if you’re holistic, believe in all things mystic, or just are really mindful about your health, the earth, and others, we’d probably get along. In my art, I try to work with humans that care about these things, because I deeply care about them too. I think what sets me apart is the way that I conduct my service. It’s not transactional, it’s relational. I care about who you are, what your day has been like, what you want to achieve ( not just now, but in the longterm! ) and I work with you on that very personal 1-1 level to best create an ~experience~ where you FEEL seen and like you ( or your business) has been showcased in the BEST light through the photos we co-create.
I’m really mindful about showing up FULLY PRESENT in my friendships and relationships, so I think the hardest part in this was accepting that I wanted to shift into that space in my career and overcoming the fear around being THAT open to people I was working with. It’s been super well received though, so I’m super excited about that! It has also been super fun to incorporate spiritual concepts ( like divine femininity) into the themes and essence of my photoshoots.
If I had to say just one message to the world, I would say: go for it. If you think there’s something that you have, that isn’t yet out there, go out + let the world know about it! Create the reality that you want to live in. For me, It’s been a tremendously rewarding experience to show up in my career the way that I want to, and it has attracted people that value my presence and energy as the
very real influence to my conscientious business. Don’t be afraid to show the world WHO you are!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
ooh, how fun!
Honestly, I would definitely cater the trip depending on the friend.
But just to have fun, we could explore some nature and go paddle-boarding at Oleta River State Park.
For a fun little snack, we could do boba, literally anywhere. You can never go wrong with boba.
We might stop at PAMM to check out one of their latest exhibits, or their after-hours events.
To eat, I love Coyo Taco because they hit the authentic Mexican food spot closer than most places I’ve tried.
Upper Buena Vista to end off the night for some drinks and music!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The highest recognition goes to my parents, definitely, for setting up seeds very early on in my life to believe that anything I put my mind to, I could achieve. My brother, for helping me see the world through a lens I might be hesitant to perceive. Lastly, my friends- especially Zaimah, Alex, and Alice, all three of these wonderful women have supported me and cheered me on time and time again as I reach for higher goals, have held space for my vulnerability, and keep me accountable to the things I desire the most.
