We had the good fortune of connecting with Stacey Lewis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stacey, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk taking: how do you think about risk, what role has taking risks played in your life/career?
Early in my life, I let fear and anxiety keep me from trying new things and pursuing the life I actually wanted to live. I’m now at a place in my life where I understand that most things worth doing require a bit of risk and I embrace the fear that comes from stepping out of my comfort zone.
I love that my career as a professional organizer now reflects the peace I’ve made with risk and allows me to help my clients find a sense of calm in their own chaotic world.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Purge Monsters Organizing is a professional organizing company offering residential decluttering, organizing, and unpacking services. We’ll work with you to create custom solutions tailored to how you live and think, so you can spend less time feeling frustrated and more time enjoying life.
I started Purge Monsters after assisting my grandmother to move into an assisted living facility out of state and helping my family close out her home and remaining belongings. I realized during the process that everyone will need a little help at some point in their lives.
With a slight nudge from my husband and family, I came to understand that my background as a stay-at-home mother, bookkeeper, and executive assistant all had one thing in common. I had spent a lifetime helping others stay organized. This skill set was exactly what I needed to start a new career in Professional Organizing. After a bit of soul searching, I took the leap and launched Purge Monsters Organizing in 2018.
It was a little scary going out on my own, but I absolutely love what I do. I jumped into this industry at the right moment. New organizing shows that aired on Netflix and other platforms had created greater awareness for the organizing industry at large and a massive boost for local organizers like me. I also joined my local South Florida chapter of the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals (NAPO), which became my second family and quickly plugged me in as their Treasurer and now President. I can’t begin to explain how important this organization became to me in terms of both education and my growth as an organizing professional.
When COVID hit, I initially thought my business would die, but then something unexpected happened. The entire world was stuck in their homes which meant they were forced to look at everything they had been ignoring. This included their clutter. What we could once ignore by simply leaving the house, was now impossible.
That’s where Purge Monsters came into play. We helped folks declutter their chaos and create environments that supported them in their new living and working situations. Being stuck in quarantine created a deep desire for calm living spaces and the ability to control something in our lives.
What was for so many people a dark and scary moment, created a unique opportunity for my business to thrive. We came in with masks, gloves, and the ability to help our clients feel connected, in control, and grounded at a time when the world seemed upside down.
I’ve learned in life as well as business that the most important key is gratitude. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to do what I love and to share that passion with my clients.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When I’m not working, I love hanging out in my local community. I love visiting our local outdoor mall (The Promenade in Coconut Creek, FL) filled with fun restaurants and little shops or catching a movie at The Silverspot movie theater in the same mall. I also love strolling along Hillsboro Beach at dawn or dusk when the air is a bit cooler and the crowds are nonexistent.
When I”m in the mood for a really good cup of tea, I’ll journey out to the Yaxche Tearoom. It has a secret garden vibe that soothes the soul and their tea is pretty darn amazing.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am so grateful for the support I’ve received from my NAPO-South Florida family. (The South Florida Chapter of the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals). They’re the reason I’m doing what I love today!
