We had the good fortune of connecting with Staci Morey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Staci, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?

It can be incredibly challenging to find work life balance, especially as a parent! This is something I work on both personally and with my clients. When I first had my daughter, I was finding that the only time I really had to myself was driving to and from work. That’s not what we want! Carving out small moments of time for myself, setting boundaries for myself in regards to checking email or technology, and asking for support to fill some of the gaps so I could have more opportunities for balance. These small things can really help!

I enjoy working and am very passionate about my career and supporting others in their journeys. That said, becoming fully self-employed has afforded me the flexibility to make my own schedule which is super helpful. I think the idea of having “balance” can almost put pressure on people in a way because it can be so challenging to achieve on a consistent basis. I’m sure most moms/parents can relate that we can feel this pressure to do it all and get very hard on ourselves when we feel like we are falling short. I can fall into that trap as well – comparing myself to others, feeling like I am not doing enough with my daughter or not focusing enough on my business but it’s important to remember there is only so much time in the day and we only have so much bandwidth for things. This is why I work on practicing self-compassion and I work with my clients on practicing self-compassion for themselves. It’s incredibly helpful in getting through the hard moments of feeling not enough. Sometimes balance can look like a walk at lunch, getting up a little bit earlier to drink your coffee, or blocking off space in your calendar for doing something you want to do for yourself. Other days it can look like taking a mental health day or planning a vacation. It’s unique to everyone – the most important thing, in my opinion, is to check in with yourself regularly and assess your energy and level of burnout so it doesn’t sneak up on you – and always working toward your goal of whatever balance looks like to you!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a licensed therapist that is certified in perinatal mental health (PMH-C) through Postpartum Support International and is also trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). My practice focuses primarily on working with women (in all phases from exploring the idea of children to dealing with postpartum and parenting issues) and helping people work through their trauma. I also have experience and enjoy working with those suffering with addiction issues and young adults dealing with their life stressors. I want people to know I understand how hard it is to ask for help. It’s incredibly brave to reach out to a therapist and to allow yourself to become vulnerable with someone. It is very important to me that my clients feel both seen and heard. I am focused on building trustworthy and honest relationships so people are able to go beyond the surface and heal the parts of them that are hurting. My clients know they can come in to session, talk about whatever they need to (as uncomfortable as it may be for them) and be met with compassion and openness.

Building a practice has not been easy, but it has been so rewarding as I have learned a lot about myself in regards to areas where I excel and areas where I can keep growing. I first began seeing clients in private practice in 2018 and have been able to slowly build my practice over time by working part-time and eventually transitioning to private practice full time in April 2021. One of the biggest challenges has been balancing all the priorities; I’m a mom to a toddler (with another baby on the way), business owner, and wife, and that’s a lot to manage! It is also challenging having everything in my business rely on me. There are definitely ebbs and flows in this business and I am grateful to have friends who are also therapists that I can talk to about it that can give me support or feedback on things I could do differently to help me continue to grow.

One lesson that has been reinforced for me is that relationships are everything. A majority of my clients come from direct client referrals or other therapists. The relationships I have with my clients is what helps them get results. If they did not feel like they were able to talk to me and be open, they wouldn’t get the help and support they need to make lasting changes. I value the relationships I build with others and am grateful that they trust me with people in their lives.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

If my best friend were visiting, I would definitely take her to Wynwood to check out the murals (which are amazing) and to grab a bite to eat. It’s one of my must-see stops when people are in town. Another stop in Miami would be Vizcaya and I would love to take her to Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens because neither of us have been. I’m a huge fan of Kaluz, Dada and Rebel House for dinner and of course, we’d have to check out the beach. I would also probably head down to Islamorada one night for dinner and to catch the sunset.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am a firm believer that growth and success cannot be done alone. I have worked with many supportive mentors and colleagues who have helped me grow both personally and professionally. All of my past clients also deserve some recognition in my story because they have taught me so much about being a compassionate therapist and how to show up for others. My husband has been incredibly supportive of me becoming self-employed and pursing my dream of being in private practice full-time. He has encouraged me every step of the way! My daughter also inspired me to start working in maternal mental health. Once I became pregnant with her, I felt pulled to work with moms and realized there are not a lot of providers who specialize in this area. I also have friends and family that have been incredibly supportive that I am very grateful for. I want to emphasize and shoutout a therapist mastermind group I am a part of called Private Practice Connect that has been so incredibly helpful for me! Especially during a pandemic when we have been so limited in in-person networking and learning opportunities, this online community has given me so much confidence, support, and inspiration – and led me to take the leap to work for myself full time!
