We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephanie Delgado and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Stephanie, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
Most of working with data is emotional, subjective work. Data truly doesn’t care about feelings or expectations, hopes or dreams, and working with it can be uncomfortable, or even painful, if it’s delivering unwanted news. It takes just as much emotional intelligence as technical expertise to work with data full time.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
DataCents Analytics works with organizations that do important things that are hard to quantify – health, environmental quality, education, opportunity, equality, etc., and quantifies them. People don’t realize that this is a big part of what economics does, and my background is as an applied economist. This gives socially minded organizations a window into what their social impact truly is, and that is often what keeps people who care about the greater good up at night, Am I actually making a difference? It’s a wonderful feeling to help people see how they ARE making a difference, and how they can do even more good with what they have.

One of the biggest hurdles that I’ve had to overcome is type 1 diabetes, which I was diagnosed with at the age of 4. Actual medical condition aside, I had no choice but to work for another company before the ACA was passed because I couldn’t get health insurance on my own. Now I can, and I’m making more money and more opportunities for others because of this systemic change.

I have learned that reputation is everything. I have never advertised my services and so far all of my business, teaching and speaking opportunities have come from word of mouth. For me, professional reputation is built on three things – being competent, being ethical/trustworthy, and being someone that people enjoy working with. If you hit all three, just keep doing what you’re doing.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The Wilton Manors/Fort Lauderdale area is packed with fun places to eat. We would make sure to get brunch at Rendez-vous on Oakland Park Boulevard, and for a nice waterfront dinner, we’d go to either Kaluz or Shooters. Both of those place are great for people watching! Angelo Elia is the place for pizza and tapas. I haven’t been in ages but Lips is always a riot! If the kids were along for the ride, there’s no way we’d miss the Bluefoot Pirate Tour. I’ve been on twice and it’s been family fun every time!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my Shoutout to my husband, Alfred Delgado. He is a wonderful partner, a truly outstanding father to our children, participates in our community, and runs a successful business and employment based immigration law firm. I dedicate this shoutout to him for the support he gave me while I was experiencing discrimination while I was pregnant. It was he who continually reminded me that going to work and doing a good job wasn’t “being a troublemaker,” and that even though reporting it and enduring what happened after was hard, I had done the right thing. Persevering through that, with his support, is part of how I continued building professionally to where I am today.
