We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephen Cue and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stephen, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
As they say “No risk. No reward.” I think risk plays a huge factor in everything we do in life. As a working artist your career lives and dies by the risks you take. You have to be willing to be open to criticism from people you don’t know and don’t know you. Just getting started is a risk. Every connection and good thing in my career has been from taking chances and believing in myself and what I have to bring to the table.
I always wanted to sing but I remember the first time performing at a church musical. I was so scared that my hands trembled playing and my voice was uncontrollably. I had to get through it. And I’m glad I did. I’ve since done many different shows since then. There have been some that went well and some where I felt like quitting altogether.
But without risk there’s no growth.
I’m taking yet another risk in releasing my 1st EP in 2022 called POSTCARDS
In order to take risks you have to have faith.
It has affected me in many areas of my life from work to how I interact with people everyday. Never be afraid to bet on your self and live the experience of life
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I come from a family of 4 siblings in a God centered environment. I’ve learned to share forgive and respect peoples individuality. My artistry is that of one who speaks to the soul. The name “Cue” comes from the understanding that we are all characters in this world stage. It’s important that we find who we are so that we can inspire the right cues for the next person after us. In a sense be yourself. My music is for the person present in their journey. I consider myself pretty versatile when it comes to music and I’m still evolving. My style can range from playful, thoughtful and chill to fun and electric.
As of today I’m most proud of getting my music out! My 1st single called “Haunting” which will be featured in my 1st EP called POSTCARDS. It’s challenged me to begin to get out of the box of my own thinking. I’m used to doing things on my own which is cool in part but at some point you’re going to have to trust people to help. This processed has really pushed me into that space and so far so good. I love the energy of the people and it’s teaching me most of all how to trust myself .
I got to where I am musically this far by trying stuff lol. I mostly create alone and then I may ask for help from trusted colleagues. Early on, (a term i use loosely because I feel like I’m just getting started) I wanted to take every opportunity. There’s sucha rush of getting out here and just going because you don’t want to miss anything. I’ve been scammed of off money, had my time taken advantage of too many times. I’ve learned to value my time and energy better. I’ve learned to say no. I’ve learned who to keep close and how to let people go. I’ve even learned to block out the noise that says give up, you’re too old, skinny, etc… Most of all I’ve learned how to settle in and trust the process. Nipsey Hustle says it best “Its a marathon” I had to learn that my face is my own. For every negative word or emotion I would feel I would counter with something positive or seek a positive experience. I think it has helped tremendously. In these times there’s so much going on and so many dealing with anxiety that we need more positive experiences. My brand is about enjoying life as it comes celebrating every side of you because every part can turn out to be the coolest side of us. It’s about being cool. It’s about being you.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
