We had the good fortune of connecting with Susan Miner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Susan, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The most important lesson my career has taught me is the hardships I endured and triumphed over was my training. As a therapist and founder of SuZen line of products including CBD, my specialty is anti-anxiety. And you guessed it, I used to have anxiety. Along the way, I swam in insomnia, depression, and self-loathing. All, not fun, I can assure you. But these hardships turned out to be lessons that I needed to pass in order to guide others along a similar path. The triumph of living a peace-filled life bestows upon me the ability to help others find their inner peace emotionally, mentally, and physically. And on a more personal level with my clients, they know that I do not judge them harshly because I have been in their shoes. I like to say, “Been there. Bought the tee-shirt.”
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What I’d love the world to know is that we always have the power to make positive changes. Our emotional and mental lives are in our control. It may not always seem that way. Yes, we may be in a deep hole, yet we can exercise some control first by stopping digging. It’s the same in our lives. We can stop doing the things that are negatively affecting us. Have anxiety? Cut down on caffeine. Depressed? Don’t drink alcohol. It may seem obvious, but this is the first step in positive change. Next, we need to ask ourselves what we can do about it. The internet is chock-full of resources and lots of them are free. Find something that helps. Don’t give up. Don’t just take the label. You may be experiencing depression, but that is not your true nature. You may have to take responsibility and change how you talk to yourself. You may have to explore nutritional support. Chances are it will take many changes, diligence, and consistency. And yes, a lot of stuff is free online, like meditations, or supplement suggestions. But it’s not all free. If your overall health is important to you then spend the money if you have it.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Most still believe that anxiety and depression are all in the head, so to speak. Through experience with myself and clients, along with research, I’ve come to realize there is often a very real physical disruption contributing to a person experiencing anxiety and depression. Chronic Lyme Disease was the culprit in my case. It was brutal at times: year-long stretches where I spent 16 hours a day in bed, constant terrible headaches, switching of words as I spoke, and exhaustion were just a few of the delights that accompanied my body. Okay, so I am getting to the shoutout. I dedicate my shoutout to my partner, Jude. Jude approached Lyme Disease as a project to be conquered. He believes that our bodies can heal. He dug, researched, and put together a plan of action for me to heal. There was a time I was really struggling (I don’t want to be dramatic, but others in the same situation have died or sustained permanent brain damage.) and doctors weren’t helping that he spent 6 or more hours a night researching and cross-referencing with my tests and what he saw me going through physically. It took two years for me to be free of Lyme and its effects. Jude accompanied me to a 3-week hospital stay in Germany. Then he brought me to treatment after treatment to help me detox upon our return home. Jude was my angel advocate. Being free of that physical drain allows me to, not only show up more fully in my career, it allows me to enjoy my entire life more fully.
