We had the good fortune of connecting with Sylvia Lott and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sylvia, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind the success of my brand, Kismetsews, is being authentic to myself and what I stand for. I’m not everyone’s cup of tea or fit the mold of what others think I should be, but I’m okay with that. I like tons of styles and dress how I feel. Some people think you can only dress a certain way at a certain point in your life. I disagree with that. I’m here to show people they can be comfortable dressing how they want, not how others expect them to dress.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is my therapy. I sew when things are going great or really bad. I’m most proud of how much I’ve grown since I first started out. I used to avoid certain types of garments or fabrics or certain fits of clothes because I wasn’t confident. Sewing helped bring back my confidence that I lost after the changes of my body from having my babies. Sewing has taught me to slow down and focus. To be creative and try something new. To be resourceful. To have fun making something that is truly one of a kind. I want the world to know that its ok to dress how you want. You want to wear a crop top? Go ahead! You want to wear patterns on patterns? Do it! Life is too short to worry about what someone else might say. Wear what you want and wear it with confidence.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them first to the beautiful Morikami Museum and Gardens followed by a lunch there at their restaurant, followed by some thrift shopping at local stores. The next day we’d meet up at Padrino’s for a delicious lunch and go to Leserra’s Nursery to grab some plants. We’d have to visit Radioactive music spot and the Big Apple bookstore (favorite book and record spot) in Ft. Lauderdale. The rest of the time we’d be sewing in my sewing area and playing in my fabrics lol.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family! They have always and in all ways supported me and my dreams. Also, Made for Mermaids pattern company, they invited me years ago when I was a beginner sewist to test their patterns. That invitation has thought and inspired me in so many ways. I’m forever grateful to them for reaching out to me and seeing my talent.
