We had the good fortune of connecting with Talia Rosen and Any Avakian and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Talia & Any, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Our definition of success is constantly evolving as our business grows. When I first started working in the industry, I thought the marker of success was how much money you were making and how many projects you had on the books. However, Any and I have learned that success is so much more than getting a paycheck — it’s about enjoying what you do, and being proud of the work you create. Our work is extremely personal to us, and it feels like an extension of ourselves that we take great pride in. Even though Avakian Interiors is still a relatively new company, we were able to develop our own distinct interior design style that clients now seek us out for. The process of creating your studio’s design style that is able to flex across various project types, while also incorporating the client’s personal preferences, is a balancing act that doesn’t happen overnight. That in itself is a success for Avakian Interiors.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Any originally founded Avakian Interiors in 2016, after discovering her love for interior design after designing and renovating her own home. She later decided to pursue interior design full time. We started working together towards the end of 2020, and have invested a lot of hard work into refining our style as interior design studio, and building a strong foundation for our business. We get the most satisfaction out of collaborating with our clients and watching their vision come to life with our help. For example, we love to incorporate our client’s unique pieces of furniture they hold from the past and try to include their sentimental objects into our designs. It’s challenging but exciting at the same time since we know that this results in truly unique and personalized designs that our clients will cherish. With every project we work on, we not only learn new tactical design skills, but we further refine who we are as a company. It took us a while to get into the rhythm of things when we first started — knowing what projects are a good fit for us, and how to best use our time since it’s just the two of us. However, these challenges helped us set new standards and shaped our work process, which in turn helped improve our client’s experience and be more efficient as a company. We believe that customer relationships are everything, and we want to be as approachable as we can to clients. We’re always just a phone call away!
As I mentioned before, developing your own unique style as interior designers is a long process that happens organically. We just recently were able to put pen to paper and say that our style is crisp and modern interiors, combined with natural textures and warm tones. Many people don’t realize how creative the interior design industry is — it’s so much more than simply selecting furniture. We are looking forward to growing our business, and can’t wait for what’s in store for us in the future.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For the friend who just has to see everything and take a picture, start the day off by walking or biking around South Beach. Stop at a cafe to grab a coffee and breakfast. Then head over to the design district for shopping and art viewing. Stop by de la Cruz to see a beautifully curated collection of international contemporary art. Head to Mandolin Aegean Bistro for lunch and a drink. For the more chill friend, I would recommend heading to the beach — Sunny Isles is my favorite place to spend the afternoon in the sun. For dinner go to Houston’s. You have to order the spinach artichoke dip — that’s a must, not a suggestion.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Any and I are both lucky enough to have family and friends that are incredibly supportive of our business. It’s a huge risk to start working for yourself, so having people on your side is a huge confidence booster. Both of our husbands have also been extremely supportive, always pushing us to grow professionally and there to support us even when things were slow when we were first starting out. I know Any’s father also played a large role in why she initially got into interior design, since he was in the real estate and construction business. Our success today is a culmination of all of the support and guidance of those close to us, to which we will always be grateful.
Our friends and family are also kind enough to get us involved in their home remodels and interior design projects, which has helped grow our portfolio. As creatives, we rely on our previous projects to help get us more work, so our close network of friends plays a huge role in where we are today and we couldn’t be more thankful.
