We had the good fortune of connecting with Rochell Ricketts and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rochell, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I grew up around music. From the days when I’d beat the desk in school to make beats and perform for my classmates, to performing in church and youth events. Something about the arts always bring people together. I’ve always dreamt of sharing my music with the world. I see myself as someone who can make a difference in the world by sharing my artistry and perspective.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a female hardcore dancehall artiste. My music is raunchy, raw, a bit gangster with a little positive vibe. I am versatile so I don’t stick to one topic. My catalogue embodies topics from every day life. What sets me a part from everyone else is my style and lyrical prowess. I give off a more dominant and masculine energy. Most female artistes these days are skimpily clad; however, I am here to show the younger folks that you can be great with your clothes on. I am excited to travel the world and share my music. It hasn’t been an easy road, however, life is all about growth and experiences so with that in mind, I just keep going. I’ve learnt that nothing worth having is ever easy, so with hard work and dedication, my dreams will become a reality. My aim is for the world to know that Tallawa is here to stay. I want people to be themselves and believe in themselves wholeheartedly.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to the beach, dirt bike riding and shopping. We would eat at some of the best restaurants in Kingston, visit Bob Marley museum, go to the studio, visit the blue mountains. Personally, the most fun and exciting places are those with a nice bar, a pool, good food and vibrant music.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wanna shout out Aurra Soul, for always believing in me and my artistry and also going above and beyond to help me hone my talent. I also want to big up Whatatamtam and Abigail from Superheavy Wednesdays.
