We had the good fortune of connecting with Tammy Bartels and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tammy, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I became a stay-at-home mom 7 years ago, I always felt things had to be a “certain way”, but I also didn’t know what that “certain way” was. You are not taught how to be a mom, and our world makes it seem like moms are supposed to live in chaos all the time. My anxiety and overwhelm were through the roof. I decided it wasn’t how I wanted to live my life. The only thing I knew to do was figure out routines and habits that could help me simplify everyday life. The more consistency I showed in various home tasks as well as clearing out excess clutter around the house continued to reduce the anxiety and overwhelm significantly. It required me to take baby steps because it wasn’t going to be perfect right away, but a process that allowed me to pursue the life I wanted to live.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I help women clear the clutter from their homes and lives to live a more simplified life. I am not your typical professional organizer. I don’t like to go in and do the one-and-done organizing jobs like you see on TV. I work with women with weekly virtual calls to create routines that will reduce the overwhelm of running a house whether they work inside or outside the home. I help women see that while the world says that everyone lives in chaos, that isn’t what God intended for us and that they can make a change. I have helped women clear out clutter from their basements and playrooms as well as office paperwork that just keeps weighing on them. This was not a simple and short process. It took work and much to what I expected, every client needs something a little bit different. Not everyone is working towards the same goal, so to figure out how to help them I take time to chat with them and get to know what they want their everyday life to look like. I am a judgment-free zone and I love to show compassion and kindness to these women as they may feel embarrassed thinking they should “have it together” by now. One of my favorite things is seeing the transformation in my client’s eyes. On my first call with a client she described her home and overall feeling of life being “frazzled”. After 3 months of weekly calls, she had a smile and a twinkle in her eye as she said “My house is a totally different place. I love it!” My biggest goal is to create sustainable actions they can take with them long term. I want to show that when we pursue peace over perfection then the peace comes much easier.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Living a simplified life means that we truly enjoy spending time together. So I would want to take my friend to downtown Waynesville and probably wander through the antique stores. I would probably take her to Hidden Lake Winery where they often have a band or trivia nights in the summer. Also, I always love to enjoy Whit’s Frozen Custard together. Lastly, we would likely attend church together on Sunday at Centerville Community Church. Having a simplified home makes it easy to host friends and family at our house to enjoy fellowship with new and old friends coming together.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shout out Melissa Batt, Christian Life Coach and Faith Mentor. She had a lot to do with my success. I started in her group coaching called Success Lounge and then moved into 1 on 1 coaching to get more individualized support. She helped me to stop getting in my way and second-guessing myself. I am what I like to call a recovering perfectionist. I come up with ideas but then can get a major mental block when I see the giant project ahead. So often what we can help others do, we struggle to apply to ourselves. While I can look at home and see tiny projects that need to happen, Melissa was able to get me to get out of my head and move forward.
