We had the good fortune of connecting with Tatiana Carrillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tatiana, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risks have always played a huge part in my life, being that they could’ve led to negative or positive impacts in my life. Running my own business has been an impactful risk in my life, because it is out of the norm for one to do. It’s being your own boss and counting on yourself for everything. While it has had its downs and ups, it’s a risk I don’t regret. It impacted my life, by showing me I am capable of doing anything by myself.

What should our readers know about your business?
Ever since I was 13 years old, I’ve been working within the fashion industry and ever since, I’ve fallen in love with the confidence one can feel when playing dress up. All my life I’ve wanted to help women feel beautiful and confident. Working with multiple brands, participating in internships, and overseeing what it’s truly like to own a business, is just a little bit of what I’ve experienced before becoming inspired to start a brand of my own. Shop The Affect will not only carry on with what I’ve done all my life but as well as helping others by having a positive affect on every woman who supports it. My goal is to ensure that every client/supporter of mine feels confident and knows that we are all capable of finding that beauty within us.

One starting their business from scratch is definitely not easy and takes lots of work. It comes with a lot of self-doubt, wanting to give up at times, and most of all the roller coaster of emotions. When I first opened up my business, I was unemployed and took all my savings to start my business. This is a risk that I took but a risk I knew I needed to take in order to make my dream come true. While it was very scary at the time, it’s what I needed to do. it was a huge challenge, because this was the first time in my life that I was completely on my own in the sense that I had no one to rely on as a boss for example. It is still a challenge I still face by just relying on myself, but with time I know that I will be able to overcome this and see that it was all worth it. Challenges will always be there, but it’s about having the mindset that I will overcome it, and my business will grow from this.

I learned in the business world that you have to be patient and willing to walk before you run. It takes time for your brand to grow, but if you work on it every single day, you will see all the growth accumulated in the end.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I were to have a friend of mine visit my city for the first time ever I would definitely take them to the brickell area and stay in the SLS hotel. It’s a central hotel where they’ll be able to enjoy all the beautiful views the city has to share. We would be able to wake up enjoy the amenities of the hotel, like getting in the pool with the beautiful climate that there is. Enjoy all the day parties the hotel has to offer and then late at night enjoy the city. Across the street we would have brickell city center that has lots of activities and restaurants to visit. One of my favorite restaurants and foods that Miami is know for is sushi at Pubbelly. They make the most exquisite sushi rolls and will want you coming back for more! My favorite roll there ever is the tempura bagel roll. that is fried with cooked salmon inside and topped with eel sauce.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In life we’re all born with a passion and desire to succeed in something specific. But behind that desire to be successful, we all have a reason, a WHY! My why has always been my mother Maria. My mother has always been there for me through my ups and downs and supported my crazy ideas. While she may have no agreed with all of them, she’s always been there to support me. When I have felt at my lowest points, she has picked me up and told me try again and this try time harder. I owe it all to my WHY, and without her there would be no Shop The Affect.
